Hugoton area??

We have been invited to hunt private land this weekend in the Hugoton area. Has anyone been doing any good in the far SW area of KS this year? Are there many quail in this region? Have been told that we might be able to get into a few prairie chickens too.

Our party of 16 limited out on opening day. Only saw one covey of quail, but we weren't hunting quail cover, mostly the CRP corners of irrigation circles. Saw lots of pheasants.

We hunted north of Rolla in the AM and just NW of Hugoton in the PM.

Have fun!

That's what we are going to be hunting this weekend. The guy that I am going with works for an irrigation company, and has lots of farmers that let him hunt their land.

2 of us hunted opening weekend SW of Hugoton. We limited out both days, which was awesome. Despite the limits, we did not see very many birds. In fact, it's the fewest number of birds that we've seen there in the last 5 years. Guides are moving into the area, and it is not unusual to see 15-20 hunters working a corner or quarter section of grass. There are quail in the area. If you walk a lot, you will probably bust 1-3 covies each day.
