How was the youth opener?

Youth opener was good. 5 kids with limits opening day, and a lot of missed shots. All public ground. Weather was perfect Saturday, then the rain & snow came Sunday and Monday.

Birds numbers looking decent - back to 2016 levels I would say. Not epic like 10 years ago, but was consistent enough action to keep the kids attention.

Lots of young birds - trouble recognizing very young roosters that barely had any color. Thankfully did not see any chicks on the ground as reported in other earlier posts.

Was surprising to see how bunched up the birds were. Lots of large group bird flushes, less scattered roosters like years past.

Cover is still not fully recovered from the drought last year. Areas that were not hayed last year are looking good, but areas that were hayed or grazed are still in recovery. The spots where the weeds thrived in the drought last year are actually more sparse this year - shorter grasses.

Lots of equipment in the field but never saw any of it move - far too wet. Beans were just starting to come out, but don't think any progress has been made the last 2 weeks since.

Interesting and informative report.

Care to share what part of the state you hunted? North? South?

Thanks
