How should I have handled this

Yeah barbed wire I think. They’ll drop the full strands off the post so they can drive equipment across when it’s converted back to farming I hate that.
 
If there was no vet available. On the tailgate I would fill with neosporen (keeps the hair out of wound) ,shave the surrounding area, totally clean with lots of pressurized saline. Then spot weld it with 3m vetbond (I am not confident with a stapler). And be at the vet when they open.
