local farmer helping me do food plots as usual guy late getting beans in...disking 10 acres then planting said acres...what is a fair price??? Thanks for your help! He is right next door if that matters.

You furnish the seed and fertilizer, I think $100 per acre?

total? he'll be disking and planting...that is 2 trips, right? Thanks! I am using "buck and cock" for the seed...it is a multi-species mix of cane, milo, etc...if we fertilize, then that would be a 3rd trip across the 10 acres, right? Sounds like a good idea, as our food plots don't really grow that well usually, which may be because we don't fertilize normally.

The size of the machinery makes a difference. There are "disks" then there are the ones that are big and heavy that will do a good job in one pass.
Small equipment will get into a lot more labor, poorer job and more expense.
Depends what the ground is like to, heavy sod or corn stubble, grain stubble?
Sod will take more fuel and time then the stubble.

I disked oat stubble and planted 20 acres of corn last year, charged $100 per acre, supplied fuel, machinery and labor. Seemed to work out for everybody. [one pass with the disk]

The average custom rate in IA for disking is about $16 an acre, planting is around $18. 10 acres is not much so maybe add a few bucks for the hassle factor. $100 seems high.

$100 seems high.
I didn't want to be the first to say it, but I wast thinking the same thing. Of course it depends on the terrain and equipment a bit as well, as mnmthunting mentioned. I'd say you should just talk it over with the neighbor to figure out pricing and what he'd find fair.

I believe the worst you can do in a case like this is be cheap.
You will develop a reputation in the neighborhood in a hurry.:(

I was asked to do the same for the guy this year. I had a hydraulic problem and choose not to. Property is down the road a few miles.

ask him, not us.

personally, if i were helping a guy put in his food plots, i'd rather have him give me a hand on the farm for a couple weekends than give me cash. but that's just me.

I don't think paying market rate is being cheap. I think paying 3 times as much is a waste of money.

thanx 4 the advice....i plan on paying him whatever he quotes me, maybe more, as i am not sure he'll ask 4 enough, and i wanted 2 hear what others thought about this topic..heading out in a week 4 the annual street dance...

Sounds like a plan:thumbsup: If he asks "what's it worth to you"
Give him a hundred bucks an acre, he well be happy to help you out again.
I wouldn't get into a discussion about the "going rate"
