Hevi-Shot Pheasant (picture)

RR,

I haven't tried it but I'll be watching this thread with interest. If you don't mind me asking, what did a box of 25 shells run you?

Thanks!

Hevi-shot

I have used the same ammo as in the picture. It is very effective. One shot a cock came from my right side and passed in front, about 25 yards out, and fell immediately. Later I found that six pellets had entered the left side and exited the right side. I had a modified choke in the gun.

This was about three years ago and the cost was about $27.50 for the ten shells. Expensive but effective. I try to make each shot count.

I bought a case when Mack Prairie Wings had the spring rebate. If I remember correctly it came to around $37.50 per 25 give or take. Pricy, yes! However, I don't gang hunt and I work one bird at a time with my pointers, so I'm not into blasting a lot of ammo to fill other guys' limits. OK, if my partner is struggling and he wants me to shoot his birds I will. :D On the other hand, much of what I hunt is open to lead shot, so shooting a few Hevi-Shot loads on non-tox land is probably one of the very smallest cost factors of the trip.

This Hevi-Shot will hopefully allow me to stay using the OU I shot all summer and I therefore have no need for a semi-auto for 3" steel. I'm money ahead! ;)

I think your right lead & tungsten or all steel but not lead & steel there is just to much difference's between lead and steel to be consistent.

I shot some of the classic double out of my 16 last season at some ducks. It is expensive, but decoying ducks were dropping dead as disco. No cripples at all...

First let me say I do this myself.

Spend thousands on dogs, buy a good 4x4 truck, buy $3.50 a gallon gas, rent motels rooms, eat out plus all the other things we spend money on for a upland bird hunt and then gripe about how much a box of shotgun shells cost and they just might be the difference in success or not--go figure :D

I bought a case of 16 ga. Kent Tungsten Matrix a few years ago directly from Kent. It was when they were discontinuing the 1 1/4 oz loads of #5 shot and closing them out. They were $400 plus $25 shipping. A case is 25 boxes of 10 shells. So it worked out to $17 per box or $1.70 per shell. Seems high but it was about half of retail. I sold a few boxes to Uncle Buck. I use mine sparingly when needed on public land with my Sweet Sixteen. Should last me several years.

Like SDJIM said, with what we pay for our guns, vehicles, gas, etc. what's a couple bucks a shell???

I really wish I could get some of that Kent for that price. I love shooting my double at ducks but $30 for 10 shots of Classic Double is a bit much...

This says it all. Ammo is the least of any of our expenses. Buy the best you can.

I used 1 1/4 hevi 6s on divers when I lived in TX and it's like kryptonyte. I've shot a few pheasants with it too. It is sort of expensive if you're stuck shooting the birds for a party though.

I buy the hevi duck or goose, when I buy hevi shot. I just prefer the heavier payloads and bigger shot.
Winchester xtended range can be had cheaper than hevi shot right now and I like it just as much or even more.
