I stumbled upon this forum last week after doing a Google search for reviews on the Beretta Silver Pigeon. Needless to say, I have spent a substantial amount of time on here over the past week and have really found it interesting and love all the different perspectives from upland hunters all over the nation.

A little about me... I currently live in Northern Utah on a 300,000 acre cattle ranch where I oversee the accounting of this ranch and 9 other ranching properties in Wyoming and Montana. I married my high school sweetheart and, together, we have two young children - a 3 year old boy and a 2 year old girl.

I grew up in a small farming town where hunting was a big part of my life. My father was/is an avid pheasant hunter and we always had a couple GSPs around the place.

A family member of mine owns 5,000 acres in South Dakota that makes for a wonderful 10 days of pheasant hunting every fall. In addition to the annual SD pheasant hunt, I usually spend 25+ days a fall hunting ducks, geese, huns, sharptails, sage grouse, ruffed grouse, blue grouse, and pheasants in Canada, Utah, Wyoming, & Idaho. There is just something about hunting birds!!

After hunting with some good buddies that have wonderful dogs, I have decided its time to look into getting one of my own. I have narrowed it down to two breeds, either a Brittany or a GSP. Choices, choices, choices....

I look forward to learning more and more from this forum in the future!

Hey Jeff, welcome to the site. Sounds like you have a great situation. Having 5,000 acres in SD to hunt has to be tough to take! :)

As far as a dog I'd vote Brittany but then I'm biased. If you plan to use the dog for ducks and geese I'd probably lean toward the GSP.

Zeb - I have read a lot of posts about your dog - Ella right? A buddy of mine has two britts, and they are absolutely incredible to watch and be around. The good thing about where I hunt ducks and geese is, for the most part, its dry field hunting or 3-8 inches of water with little cover (I mainly hunt out of a Finisher layout blind, or a Beavertail Final Attack boat), so my new dog's purpose will strictly be to find upland birds.

And yes, having 5,000 acres in SD is tough gig, but someone has to do it... :)

CPA? Oh jeez, between the two of us, we just may nerd up the place. (I'm a financial advisor)

Welcome!

NERD ALERT!!!

One good thing about being an accountant is that my "busy" season is Jan - April, the months that are cold here in Utah. All that time spent in the office during Jan - April, equals plenty of time off in the fall to hunt!!

Glad you have read my posts about Elle. She is quite the dog. Loves water and I know she'd have no problem bringing back a duck as long as it wasn't too cold. She's retrieved quite a few pheasants out of the water. If you're out here this fall I be glad to show her off for you! :D
