Welcome to UPH, Congrats on the new ESS. Kindly tell us more, what birds do you hunt? With what gauge and make of gun? Stuff like that please..........Bob

Warm Welcome

Thanks everybody, for the very warm welcome.

I'll post more from my other computer.

Howdy from Texas and welcome to UPH! Enjoy the site.

As promised

We named him Parker, and hope he earns a reputation as fine as those shotguns. Failing that, he'll still do great at drinking beer and watching movies with me. We found him at Springers Forever kennels, of Sherburn, MN.

I have a variety of shotguns from which to choose when going afield. My 'go to' favorite, currently, is a Browning Gold in 20ga. I also have a Beretta 390 in 12ga, and a Beretta 687 in 28ga. There are a number of older pumps and break actions in the vault, most notably a pair of Savage Model 24 combination guns that are used mostly for rabbits and squirrels.

Looking forward to sharing adventures here. Thanks again for the warm welcome.

I see you list a 28 gauge, Bobby. Have you or do you ever use it for pheasants. I like using mine they do a great job over my Brittany. Over your ESS should not be much different......Bob

nice looking pup and enjoy the site their are several good guys here to help you they have already helped me with a few problems with my new gwp ,so welcome and howdy from Oklahoma

Actually, no I've never used my 28 on pheasants, although I've considered it. The only thing I've taken with it is clay birds on the skeet field, and missed a number of grouse and woodcock.

I'd be delighted to learn of anybody's preferred 28ga loads for pheasant, as I'm an avid handloader.

Bobby, Welcome to the site and great pup. I would be intersted also on a good load for my 28. I have used it up in S.D.,but have yet to try it in Kansas because they are a little more wiley at the present time. I love that gun!!!! Good Luck

Bobby I like to use Longshot in my 28 gauge. I was told a few years ago it was the best powder for it versatility. Here is the website for their Data. Just follow the simple instructions and you will get a lot of good loads. http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp

The one I like best is for the Winchester AAHS case. I use only them for reloading.

Powder: 16 grs Longshot
Wad: Rem. PT28
Shot: 3/4 ounce of any shot.
Pressure 10,800
Speed 1275

As you can see my favorite has good speed and pressure. I have loaded this recipe with 7 shot, 6 shot and 5 shot. That 7 shot load can only be reloaded and you may have look to find pure 7 shot. Everybody will try to sell you 7.5 shot. Don't do it. In the 28 gauge there is something with the 7 shot that is almost like magic. I shoot a O/U and In the 1st barrel the 7 shot. The 2nd has a 6 or a 5 depending on how the pheasant are flushing.........Bob

Bobby, generally speakin no. In S.D. there are so many birds that if 50 get up out of range, there are probably 50 waiting to get up. In Kansas , the birds are there, but it seems when one decides it's time, they all decide it's time. I just do not feel comfortable this late in the season using it. If they were holding better, you bet..That 686 siver pigeon 20/28 combo is awesome for those tight coveys though. Definitley my most enjoyable gun.

28ga

Perhaps this isn't the correct forum for this conversation, and I don't want to get off track and torque off the regulars.

Having said that...I've never tried Longshot. My typical skeet load for my 28 is Universal Clays, with #9 shot, at 1200fps, ALWAYS in a AAHS hull. It does very well for me, except for that pesky low-house station 2.

I've seen #7 shot at my local emporium, but have never bought a bag, always favoring the more typical 7.5's; 8's and 9's. I keep some 6's around for crows, but I usually purchase my ammo for my serious hunting (the exception being varmints)

Thanks for the tip!

B

When I go hunting I shoot 99% reloads. They work very well for me. That is why I use Longshot Bobby. It has the versatility to give me these speeds 1200, 1225, 1250 and 1275. I use universal and longshot for my clay shooting. But for hunting you just cannot beat Longshot in my book........Bob
