Heartworms

My 3 year old Vizsla tested positive last week for heart worms. I give my dogs a dose of Sentinel the first week of every month, so you would think that the monthly medicine would have prevented or resolved the issue but it didn't. My other 2 dogs were both negative.

Now on antibiotics and following the standard treatment protocol. He'll be getting additional shots and I need to restrict his running for a while but he should be fine before fall.. Vet is following up with Sentinel to see if they will cover expenses. We'll see. Already moved him over to Heartgard. Both are expensive.....even more so when they don't work.

It does pay to get them tested.

Sorry to hear that! where are you from and was this just a routine checkup or were you seeing something that raised a concern?

We live in NW Arkansas on a lake but we're in Kansas City a lot and he ran in hunt tests and hunted in multiple states last fall and winter. Difficult to say where he got the mosquito bite. It was a routine check up and he hasn't shown any signs of being sick. He was due for a Parvo shot and they did a fecal and heart worm test while he was in there.
