Headed to Kansas

Looks like we have decided on KS this year. Did DIY hunts in Iowa for two years and then to SD last year and had a great time each trip. Did some research, hunted hard on mostly public land and took a few birds. Plan on the same approach this year in KS. There will be two - three of us and a couple of dogs. Planning on leaving AR around Dec 13, turkey hunt for a day or two around Hutchinson and then head further west. Looking forward to it.

One question - Looks like the towns are rather small and far between in W Kansas. How hard is it to find lodging? Do most of the larger towns have some type of lodging available? Kind of had the same problem in SD last year - tried to avoid the beaten path but it was hard to find lodging out away from everything.

Pick a place and expect to drive. Basically every county has a place to stay somewhere.......but certainly not every small town.

not only lodging, sometimes finding a decent place to eat can be a challenge too. you will find more choices for both right on I-70. Hays is my favorite for food and lodging choices....there are others too.

Ran into the eating thing in both SD and Iowa - we always pack our lunch anyway and by the time supper gets there, anything will do.

Hays is good- small towns you'd best reserve- if it comes to that- carry a coleman and cook up the pheasants

motels not so easy to come by in small towns but usually you can find a decent mom and pop place to get a hot meal everyday but sunday

One more question - I have read through the regs and apparently missed the steel/lead shot statement. What are the rules in KS on public land? Where is non-toxic required for upland hunting? Thanks for all your help.

All waterfowl areas are non-tox only. Most other wildlife areas are open to lead. Look for the information shelters or get the maps off of the website to find where they're located before you leave. www.kdwp.state.ks.us

as far as I know nontoxic shot is only required around lakes and streams I would check the regs one more time to get a definate answer
