To make a long story short we flushed a big rooster tonight at about 15 yards and I panicked, shot in self defense, shot way to fast! Made a terrible shot and the bird nosed down, I fired again noing I nicked him the first time......missed trying to get a shot off before he got to the ground. The dog was at the spot instantly and took off, I'm PO'D no bird and the dog ran off, I stayed at the spot so when the "idiot" returned we could pick up the trail. 25 minutes later I see my dog about 400 yards away coming towards me, then he's almost to me I see he's carrying the rooster, drops it at my feet and starts hunting again! I pick it up, NOT ONE tail feather in it? Only thing I can think of is the dog was trying to catch him and kept getting feathers. Is this possible? The rest of the bird was in perfect shape, so the dog wasn't chewing on it. To make a short story long has anyone seen this before??

Yep, runners hardly ever make it to the bag with a tail feather intact.

Yup. Pup tries to grab whatever's closest & that is typically "the part that went over the fence last," as Grandma used to say . . .

Yes a nicked bird will run for his life. your dog needs an at a boy or girl. Dog may have been on a hot trail of another bird. Give your dog credit for the track and retrieve. Oh and learn how to shoot. LOL LOL just kidding. lol This has happened to everyone at least once.

Dog A+, Ideot???? better learn to trust that nose LOL:cheers: One hell of a job by that dog. Not many can do that, or will. B happy. I have seen it plenty of times. Gives me a woody, certainly not PO'd.;)

I always trust the nose but I've never had him take off like that before, quite sure he was on that rooster the entire time. This is his 3rd season and I've never lost a bird with him, he will not quit! I thought this was the one, probably the worst display of shooting in 3 seasons also! think I knocked it down with muzzle blast.

Sounds like a helluva dog! Next time trust him! :D
