GSP quetion

I've bird hunted labs my whole life. I now have a GSP (and two labs). I have a fair amount of property and let her roam. She spend a lot of time pointing any bird she sees. Is this a no no? I got to thinking that letting her run around on her own free will pointing while not under my control might be a mistake. Tell me what you think. I do keep a collar on her so she doesn't go to far and comes when I call.

Thanks

first... Congratulations! second... how old is the dog. I'd recommend getting a pointing dog training book to use as your bible, a program for you and your dog to follow. You will get many answers from many people, all with great experience and the best of intentions. Don't think there will be shortcuts. Recommend looking for a NAVHDA chapter to hook up with in your area to get in field training for both you and your dog.

I wouldn't worry about it at all. If it's a younger bog it will figure it out when it's hunted more. If it's older I just chalk it up to playing around. My 10 yr old Vizsla has been pointing all sorts of song birds lately but it's middle of the summer and he's bored sh!tless!

So while I was watering the wife's garden tonight, the English Setter is hard on point by one of the Fir trees. I give him the "Are U Serious" whistle and he doesn't move. So I amble over and he is hard on point. I look under the tree and see nothing. ease around to the other side and look under and see movement. He was pointing a nest of baby rabbits, so new their eyes weren't open.:) Took some pix and called him of and away he went to find something else to smell. Summer Doldrums. they figure it out.
