GSP in heat

She is right around a year old and is swollen with a bit of bleeding. I presume this to mean she is in heat and hopefully normal? Is there anything I need to pay particular attention to? Do I need to clean her? Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.
 
MOre then likely she is marking. A common behaviour while in this condition. Keep an eye on her and keep her under lock and key for the next 3 weeks. You dont have to clean her, but you can put a diaper on her if she is in the house.
 
Mstand has you covered. Keep her in solitary confinement with no "faith" that she will follow commands that she has all her life. Use the leash and don't get far from somewhere you can confine her. She may make a break for it and seek a mate where she would never have ignored you before. Same goes for the neighborhood males. They may go to great lengths to get a lock on her loving. Time to fortify. She sounds like things are going normally. Around day 10-14 the color of the fluid will pale to a straw color and she will start flagging and standing when a male is present. Vigilance! I'd not get comfortable at 3 weeks, it could run past a few days. Females can be different and I've had successful breedings past 20 days.

You have a great point. I had a friend bring her female to my house and we spent the day training. After words we were all siting on the porch drinking a beer.
I looked over and Max had her locked up! I was pissed!!! I questioned the friend and she told me that he bitch was on day 28 and shouldnt have excepted him.
I had ZERO idea the dog had even been in heat!

Luckly, no puppies were produced. But I am very vigilant about things like this now. I suspect her count was off.

Experienced males will TAKE the bitch. Once they grab them with their legs it may be all over. They are strong and if you are by yourself you may have a hard time wrestling them apart.
 
My GSP went into heat a few ago Aug 12 or close to. At what point would I be safe to bring her around males just to be safe. I also have a NAVHDA coming up on Sept 1st and 2 more CKC test on 7 & 8. I hope this doesn't effect her in the field too much. I have taking her in the field with no birds out and doing water work and all seems fine but a little testy on commands I found.

I have it figured as you should keep her locked down until the 7th-8th of Sept to be on the safe side.

Yea, some dogs act different during their heat cycle. SOme dont. Mine is a complete freak during it.
 
Yeah I already contacted them some I will be running last on the Sunday. Good thing is they don't have many dogs running on the Sunday so I don't have to wait around all day.

Mine is acting a little differently being in heat. Just a little more hyper and peeing a lot more.

Yeah, this is her first. I originally had planned on breeding her, but the more I think about it I'm not sure it'd be the best idea. I'm not sure that I would have the time to make sure everything is done properly and safely and I don't know how I would be able to handle a litter of pups for 2 months.

I'm still tossing around the idea of getting her spayed, but I think I might regret that. Maybe when she's 3 or 4 (she's going to be 1yr old in a couple of days) I'd better be able to manage a litter.
 
Hank, it is generally recommended to wait until their second heat and closer to the age of two before breeding a young bitch. That allows her cycle to extablish and her body to mature into the ability to carry a litter while not growing herself. It also allows you to evaluate her natural talents and watch for any genetic faults.
 
Hank, I will spare you the breeding lecture. But you have to knw what you are getting into and understand that your responsibility to the pups doesnt ed when they are sold. Often times you will also put more money in then you will get back. Finding the right male may require extensive travel. Complications with pregnancy or the birthing etc. I would also wait until she was 2 years old before I bred her.

As far as spaying. If you go this route, wait until she is 18 months or older. This way her body had quit growing and is beginning to mature. I have seen a lot of pups that were altered early that over grew their bodies.
