Grouse Opener

We will be heading up to Bird Camp Saturday for the grouse opener. In the past it was a sure thing that we would have chances to harvest grouse. Not so anymore, they have become increasingly rare. I actually took them for granted focusing mostly on the ringneck . Anyway it's going to great to get back out and get the season underway ! Good luck to anyone heading out!

We decided to try a new spot I found on google earth. It looked like it could hold both woodcock and grouse. We started out along a creek bottom and then headed towards some hemlock. Once we figured out the lay of the land we decided to push this hillside that looked good. In the beginning of the push about a 50 yards ahead a grouse flushed wild! No woodcock were seen..maybe the weather has something to do with that!

We hunted some great looking new cover and were lucky to flush the one grouse. This spot is definitely worth revisiting. We were surprised that we did not encounter any woodcock, like Hollow said it's probably because of all the previous warm weather. Still felt good to be back in Pennsylvania's uplands !

I took Connor out Friday and Saturday for the end of youth pheasant and we moved a few birds. But none went in the game bag. Not sure how much I’ll be out on Saturday since this weekend is the 3 day youth season for doe and I’ll be out with Connor for that.

At least you moved one bird. Good luck this fall.
