Grouse Opener

My Wirehair attacked a small porky on Sunday. I wasn't far from the truck and started to work on them. The quills were short and many broke off from the dog trying to paw them out. Two other hunters came by and gave me a hand. It took all three of us to hold her still open her mouth and pull quills. This is the 6th porky she has tangled with in the last 3 years. Slow learner.http://www.ultimatepheasanthunting.com/forum/images/smilies/mad.gif. She has some swelling in the jowls area called the vet for some antibiotics, vet said try benadryl also. Those 2 hunters were a great help and I owe them a debt of graditude.http://www.ultimatepheasanthunting.com/forum/images/smilies/10sign.gif

What kind of areas do porkys prefer? Is it in pine forests and similar?

The area I hunt in central Wi has them
all over but mostly in areas with older growth mixed woods of pine, oak, and aspens. Good grouse cover doesn't seem to be preferred by them it's usually between cover they find them.

Well if anybody ventures out into the north woods, make sure to be prepared for ticks.

I made a quick trip to my land to get some things out of the shed, and my dog was covered in super small deer ticks. I didn't apply any tick preventative because it was sort of an unexpected trip, but I wish I had. Pulled a pretty engorged one off him last night that must have made the trip home with us.

This things were the smallest ticks I have ever seen. Such a headache.

Yeah, they've gotten really bad up there! Those small deer ticks are difficult to find within the dogs fur. After a 2007 grouse hunt in Cent. Wis, my pooch had them dug in all over his ears and between his eyes:eek: This was after I checked him over the night before too:confused:.

From that point on I just put the preventative on them (that you mentioned). Don't like that stuff too much but it's better than picking dug-in ticks off of the dogs the following day.

Each year one seems to dig into me too. I have a way of attracting ticks for some reason. I don't know if this is true or not, but someone told me they're attacked to a certain blood type over another. Who knows.

First day of grouse hunting in the books and no wolves to report. I felt very safe. It was nice to knock the dust off the gun. Only able to pick up 1 today. Leaves should be out for the most part next weekend.

Forgot to mention if you go check closely for ticks. The deer ticks are very bad this year.

There must be a few starting to move. Last Wednesday night while fishing a small lake in Southeast wisconsin, a group of five flew overhead right at dark along the edge of a marsh.

With a cold, wet May and June, I've been really worried about our bird populations. But I've been running into local woodcock and some grouse. It's not all lost. The leaves are coming off now and shooting opportunities are getting better. It's go time!

Ticks are out in force, too. I forgot to treat my pup and have been picking off ticks since last night. The biospot went on this morning.

One thing with setters, is mine have never gotten into a porky. One young dog a few years back pointed and held, allowing me to get my hands on her and heel her away. In young aspen, too, which surprise me as they frequent mature timber. Good bird spot. I tied her leash to a tree, went back and took are of that porky. It's amazing what #8 shot from a 20 ga. will do at 10'.
