Great Hunting north of Pierre near Gettysburg

My party of 4 just finished a 5-day hunt in the Gettysburg area (radius of 50 miles or so) and it was great. We didn't have the best of conditions--3 days of rain, and one day of heavy (50mph) wind--but it was still good. We saw A LOT of birds and it seemed like a lot of crops have been harvested. We never have any problems, but this year was especially good since the large percentage of harvested crops improved the number of birds using CRP and other areas. Compared to last year I think the amount of crops harvested is probably the same as it was last year in early December, but it probably varies by specific location. Habitat looked as good as ever and we shot lots of young birds and a lot of older ones as well. Just amazing how you can come off of a severe winter and still have that many birds. We did not see as many grouse as we normally see, but who knows..... Maybe they are using other habitat this time of year.

public or private land?

Did you stop at the Kroeplin Truck Plaza which is on Hwy 18 Jct Hwy 14? from Pierre to Gettysburg, only one way to get there... just curious if you stopped at that junction corner where theres a huge gas station?

We hunted both private and public, as well as some road ditches in remote areas. Lots of birds wherever we went. Of course you can get some slow periods, but then you walk another field or area and get 4 roosters in 10 minutes to flush. A good dog always helps.

No we didn't stop at that truck stop, but we have in the past. We stayed at East Whitlock Resort, which is kind of pricey ($140/night) but it was all that was available with a fridge/freezer/stove when we decided on the dates we were hunting. The resort is a nice place and Randy the owner is good. We like the location near the MO River and there is a lots of walk in in that area and a diversity of crops.

R-man,
thanks for the Info. We are headed that way for a week tomorrow. We have a cabin in Farm Island State Park that looks very promising.
