GREAT dog books...get a Xmas present for yourself

Just read a couple of good and very good books with dogs featured.

The best, A ROUGH SHOOTING DOG, by Charles Fergus, is the story of the first year hunting with a field springer spaniel. Fergus is a talented and artful writer of our language, and the book is not a springer owner's lavish praise of his dog, but rather a joy of the experience of hunting which all bird dog owners can appreciate. One of those sit by the fire with a sipping drink books.

One line (which I can't find now...of course) goes something like:

"For a hunter, Fall is the island towards which we swim all year long."

exactly.

The other, HOME WATERS, is the story of a man and his golden traveling the fly-fishing waters out west after he learns of the illness his dog. Not a tear-jerker, and not all that fly-fisherman minutiae laden prose, but the story of small events of man wandering around with his dog. Really, NOT maudlin, but "companionable" reading instead.

Do yourself a treat, these books, especially the first, belong on all bird-hunters' book shelf.

Happy Holidays.
