I usually spend 10-12 days a year in southwest ks around Lakin, however this year looks like a bust down that'a way. hence I wrangled a trip with an old friend to his families haunts around Penokee / Hill City. It's been about 20 years since Ive been up there, anyone have any idea about what to expect? will hunt private on opener, then on our own for a few days.

snowing at the moment here in southern CO, hope it makes it out your way

The Nebraska opener is this weekend, I think. I would wait to hear how the opener is just North of the border and adjust your expectations based on that.

You should be able to get into some decent bird numbers up there, going to be crowded on public land I'm sure. Spoke to my family in Southwest Kansas this morning and they have 3 inches of wet snow on the ground!

Thats good news - they definitely need it.

Tom,

I'd say you ought to head up that way.

One suggestion, be sure you get your parking permit in advance to avoid the lines.

My understanding is that the counties in the NW portion of the state have decided that you will need a parking permit this year. This is being done since every bird hunter in the country will be heading to NW Kansas in November and December. Many NW counties talked about installing parking meters on every WIHA, but decided that it might scare the birds the when coins are inserted.

Just kidding but, oh my, it's going to be a mad house in that area this year!

Good luck!

Point!

if you look at the Kansas State Wildlife website, Graham county is the one county north of I-70 that had the CRP plots opened to grazing due to drought, and most of it's walk in is in the southern portion of the county. Perhaps it's not THE best choice as NW counties go but we do have a limited amount of private land to hunt... We shall see what happens........
