Does anybody use a hand held gps for hunting? Reading about them in a magazine (Illinois fish and game) and thought i would ask.

You bet. But mostly in unfamiliar areas. I usually just mark where my truck is and go wander but they certainly help you get to a particular spot.

I have the ETrex Venture. One of the costs with them is buying the maps to put in them. That can be pricey but you can find free maps online if you look. One of the drawbacks is the amount of map area they hold. Its limited to the card size so if you go all over your state then you have to keep down loading different maps from your computer.

If you want to be sure you are on a certain piece of property they are indispensable. Carry spare batteries.

You bet they are great. I love mine for Grouse hunting. I get in those trees and it could be trouble getting back. With my Garmin GPS I take the SUV location when I am ready to start hunting. It leads me back to the SUV when I'm ready to leave.........Bob
