Got my speed-goat yesterday. Bought left over tags when I got back from Afghanistan, all I could get were doe tags for GMUs 112-115. Knocked on doors and found some property. Had know idea farmers hated them as much as coyotes. The owner of the property we hunted yesterday really despised them for tearing up his fences.
Used a little H&R Handi-Rifle in .270 with soft nosed 130 grain rounds. Had sighted it in for a dead hold at 300 yds and really glad I did. Killed my antelope at 389 yds. The 130 gr Remington Core Locked rounds blew up in the chest cavity and she dropped dead on impact.
My buddy missed two earlier in the morning with his fancy rifle and high dollar Hornady custom rounds (I don't think he spent enough time getting it properly sighted). He borrowed my rifle in the evening and got his at 152 yds. A trophy sized buck pushed her right to us. She dropped in 3 steps. I think they would have walked right over us if we had let them. After the shot the buck ran right up to us with in 50 yds.
It was a great time with a few lessons learned. Spend time with your equipment no matter how good it is. A range finder is almost a must out on the plains. And animals are like people, when intent on doing the "nasty" ain't nothing else on their mind. Need to do the draw next season and get a buck tag. Can't wait to fill my tag for the late season!
