Good News for CRP

Here is a email I Just sent to all my UGUIDE Pheasant Camp Owners about the new CCRP incentives and programs in South Dakota.

Hello UGUIDE Outfitters,

I hope this message finds you knee deep in pheasant chicks, fat cattle and healthy crops!

I just wanted to pass along the latest updates on CRP as the general signup is over and posted a dismal 1.7 million new acres nationwide and probably many of those were re-enrollments. Not surprising however giving the recent years AG economy.

The continuous CRP programs are always the ones I look at to make the most sense in integrating into the whole farm plan. They are best deployed on marginal non or semi-productive acres and used under the guise of ?farm the best and buffer the rest? strategy.

Here is a list of the current offerings and some are definitely dangling a bigger carrot than ever before:

FWP (Farmable Wetlands Practice) $150/ac. SIP (Signing Incentive Payment), plus 20% bonus on rent. 40% PIP (Practice Incentive Payment), 50% Cost share (with PIP this totals 90% Cost Share)
? 4 to 1 acre of Grasslands to Wetlands, 3 of last 10 years cropping history, you get paid rent on the wetland acres as well.
CP23A $150/ac. SIP (Signing Incentive Payment), plus 20% bonus on rent. 40% PIP (Practice Incentive Payment), 50% Cost share (with PIP this totals 90% Cost Share)
? 4 to 1 acre of Grasslands to Wetlands, 4 of 6 years crop history form 2002-2007
CP 37 $100/ac. SIP (Signing Incentive Payment), plus 20% bonus on rent. 40% PIP (Practice Incentive Payment), 50% Cost share (with PIP this totals 90% Cost Share)
? 10 acres of upland grass for every acre of wetland. Wetland can be slough and not have cropping history. No payment on wetland acres never farmed.
New pollinator practice is available - $150 SIP, standard rent and 50% cost share
? Diverse forb native mix and very good for pheasant nesting.
Also acres for SAFE CP 38 - both east and west river. $100 SIP, standard rent and 50% cost share
? Minimum block of 20 acres and no limit to how many acres you can put in.

As an example let?s say you had 100 acres that would qualify for FWP and the rent might be $100/acre the payments would look like this:
? $15,000 up front 1-time signing bonus
? annual rent would become $120/acre annual rent with 20% bonus.
? Add the pheasant hunting income on top of those CRP acres which can be $50-$200/acre on average and it can start to make sense.
? All our top camps have good amounts of top quality CRP as part of their hunting/farming operations.

Sept. 30 is currently a soft deadline - since farm bill expires again potentially. You can contact me, your FSA office of Pheasants Forever Farm Bill biologist Jim Ristau for more info.
