Good thing is we only saw 1 other group of 3 hunters, they were on private ground both times we saw them.

Bad thing is we only saw 2 pheasants in the WIHA's we've had success on in past years. Had a solid point on a hen from my pup, and a rooster flushed wild. 4 hours drive, 4 hours of hard walking to see 2 birds and 4 hours drive home. Beats sitting on the couch.

The other group of 3, the times we saw them didn't have any feathers sticking out of their bags either.

i will only say my experience in that general area has been completely opposite, going back again in January.

Hopefully it was just yesterday then, or the weather, or something. We typically hunt there once a year, just myself, or maybe a couple others, and have shot birds in the past on WIHA's in late season hunts.

i am not saying it is easy, the birds are running hard on the dogs and i am sure we don't even see some of then, typical, but i saw over 100 pheasants about 10 days ago hunting in the vicinity......birds are there, just been real dry and lots of pressure this year....give it another go in January, especially if we get some snow, the tracks you see in the snow will tell the story.

I hope this doesn't offend anyone, but I believe it's the huge groups walking hand-in-hand across half-mile fields that are driving all the game off the public lands. When you don't leave one square-foot of grass untouched, the birds have no place to go but elsewhere.

The law of large numbers doesn't give the birds a chance either. To me that's not a fair chase.

spot on.....i agree completely, i never hunt with more than 3 guys, often by myself, ethical hunters know the definition of "fair chase" and a field dragnet damn sure isn't that!

I personally prefer small groups but know that some people use Opening Weekend or Thanksgiving to reunite with family and/or friends and those groups can get rather large. I also know of some large groups who split into smaller groups to hunt and then get back together for the social aspect. But, I definitely understand what you all are saying. I talked to a guy the other day who typically goes to Liberal opening weekend with a large group. Asked him how they did and he replied "Not worth a sh!t." Then commented that he may not go next year because it's just not worth it to only get 40 birds!! A messed up perspective in my mind.

It is surpising that one day is great, then several weeks later nothing. I have found that when times are tough, I will start walking an area, jump out of the cover, hit the other end then push back to where I started. Sometimes works well for those running ahead birds.

I liked reading your post, Nick, and I agree with what you are saying. To each their own. Some people really like to get out there and hunt. Others just want to socialize and shoot their guns. It is safe to say that the UPH population is made up of hunters.

Cheesy, I was in that general region about 10 days ago. I saw a lot of birds that were VERY jumpy. In fact, when I hit the first WIHA on my first day I sat in the truck for about 10 minutes while I gathered up my stuff and got ready. As soon as I opened the door of the truck, the field erupted about 200 yards away. Obviously there had been a lot of hunting pressure there if the birds 200 yards away were watching my truck to see if the door would open... I immediately closed the door again and drove to the opposite side of the 1/2 section. There were birds everywhere. 2 roosters held for my GWP's point. I wonder if they weren't the same birds that got up from my first parking spot.
