Pride and I are going to give it another go. Hopefully, I will report back with my first limit of the season.

Good luck.

A friend of mine posted some pictures of a rooster that he shot yesterday. Said that he saw about 10 roosters in 2 days. Most were flushing from a good distance out.

That is what happened during opening day. Plenty of roosters, but getting up 100+ yards out there. Maybe we can surprise a few.

I was thinking about driving up to Cobb Lake today to get the boys some exercise, but decided that I should go to Ft. Morgan with them to look for birds instead. Worked a corn field, but only found goatheads, along with a dead owl and a goose head from a decoy.

Might give it another try again tomorrow morning. If I wake up at 4:00AM I can drive to Fleming and hunt a couple of fields before my wife wakes up!

Good luck...I am up at the same time. I owe a rancher a case of beer for allowing me to hunt his land during opening day. He was nice and this is the least that I can do. My wife actually made some great cookies for him as well.

The gas tank is full, and the coffee will be hot.

Time to drive and walk.

Success....

A detailed overview to follow.

-Up at 4 am
-Fields by 7:45 am
-Hit my favorite WIA and had two fine roosters in the pack by 8:30 am!
-Tried 3 other solid fields and saw nothing - Pride got hot a few times but nothing jumped.
-Thanked a landowner for allowing me access to his property (case of Bud Light and my wife made her famous coconut cookies) - landowner told me it was not necessary, but it is. Great family.
-Walked his CRP and shot my third bird
-Limited out before lunch!
-450 miles of driving.......I am one happy hunter

fantastic

Congrads on the day. Birds are out there and its obvious you know what you are doing . beautiful dog, partial to black labs myself..is your lab primarily a flusher or does he/she point? Never hunted with a pointing lab that was past pup stage and knew it's stuff. kind of intrigued with the possibility now that my lab is just about 12.

Thanks. I am not afraid to work hard, and I appreciate getting lucky. The birds we are shooting at are mature and know how to evade predators. Most of the pheasants that I am seeing are getting up out of shooting range.

I love Pride. He has a demeanor that is so unique.

Pride is a Gary Ruppel dog (Kiowa Creek Kennels). I adopted him over 2 years ago. His prior owner had Gary train him to point. Pride will point as long as the bird is frozen or the scent is extremely fresh. If the bird is moving, Pride will pursue until he flushes it. Pride is 9 so we will get another Grand River Lab from Gary if he has a litter.

I forgot the GoPro Hero 2 on the way out the door today....too bad as the flushes were pretty cool.
