Im going to the family farm this week in NE Iowa, Butler county and was wondering if anyone lives near there that would like to go?

Walked a field that is tall grass for maybe 2 hours last week by myself and saw two roosters. I did not walk the whole thing or have a dog. Dont ask me if I got any of the birds:(

Hello MadisonCounty,

I live in the county next to Butler and I am afraid you are going to be very disappointed with what you see while visiting there. The past few years have been brutal on the four or five counties in your area. We just do not have the birds.

Where do you live? I know that there arent ALOT of birds out there but if your'e willing to walk around I think that there are birds out there. My family has land up there and there is a lot of good area to hunt I think. Is there anywhere you would suggest hunting in iowa that a person may have better luck at?

I am in Grundy county. I live 4 miles from the county line with Butler. Have many friends in Butler county. I have not hunted there, but the reports have been bad. One or no birds in an entire section! You know that this is new for us. We were blessed with decent bird numbers for many years. You are correct that the cover is there, the birds just do not exist to be in it. If you follow my posts I have spent my entire season in NorthWest Iowa. It has been the only area that I can consistently get into birds. I have not shot a bird in central Iowa this year.

Kbell, whats with all of the negativity? You always are talking and saying that there is not any birds. I was out for a hour or two and saw two roosters in one field and did not walk the entire thing. That was in your area too. I know that is not alot of birds but i do believe that there are some and that we need to stay positive.

Truth?

I believe you might be mixing truth with negativity. I have no qualms with you or anyone else hunting the fabulous rooster. You asked what the conditions were in the area and I reported what I know, have been told or observed this season. According to your report, you saw two in two hours, if you were fortunate enough to harvest them, then what? What would you have left in that section for breeding in the spring?

We cannot leave the cupboard bare and expect to eat a great meal next year. Did you bother to talk to any of the neighbors in the area about bird numbers and hunting access? Are we on the same page now?

Wise man

KBell-

You are a wise man and we are on the same page! I understand what you are saying and fully agree. No I have not talked to any of the neighbors yet but i might tomorrow. Only saw one rooster today and 4 deer.

I think Kbells playing possum:D If he says theres not many bird better hunt there. And where he says he gets some don't hunt there:cheers:

Hello MadisonCounty,

You are right about the deer. I am still seeing many when traveling around the area. I do not believe we had much hunting pressure for them this year. As you know, our county is not high on the list for anterlered deer. Sorry to hear about your lack of numbers today. I wish I could PM you a good spot to hit but I haven't heard of any here this year. I never hunt the big marsh up by Allison, maybe you could find out what that is like?

Coot, how could you? I, more than you will ever know, wish I was playing possum about the birds in my central Iowa area. I would give almost anything to be wrong. I have the overnight motel bills, fuel costs and worn boot leather to attest to my long travels this year and last. I occasionally dream about walking out the back door like I used to and harvest birds. I sometimes dream of the bird harvests on our farm in years past.:)

Oops! Reality has set back in. By the way, I am off at 5 a.m. to travel north and west for another bird hunt. Will possum(I mean post) on how I do.:D
