Thanks for the report! That isn't bad for some late season action. The weather doesn't sound to promising for tomorrow. Good luck!

Hey guys on our second day of the hunt we hunted WIHA south of glen elder again. We found a ton of birds in crp ditches adjacent to milo fields. They were flushing way out and alot of hens but we did get some birds as well. Almost every ditch we hunted had a bird or two and the ones with the hens had about 15 birds per ditch.!!!

I was out there with a buddy two weeks ago and it was our first trip to Glen Elder/Osborne area but we were clueless about where to hunt... We saw some great spots around the southwest area of the lake but we didn't know if it was only for those KDWP "special hunts" or open for anyone during the season? Then we saw in the Glend Elder brochure we got at an info. station that you have to get some free daily permit to hunt there. To avoid getting in trouble we just opted to hunt WIHA around Osborne.

Pardon my stupidity but is the public land at the actual lake OK to hunt anytime during the season or is it reserved for special hunts only? Also do you have to get that free daily permit.

We did find a couple of nice WIHA near the Blue Hills area south of Osborne but our goal was to hunt the famed Glen Elder area. Please explain to this newb where to hunt in that area, thanks for your help! Before this the furthest west I hunted was near Belleville and Concordia.

I think I can help. I was awarded a "special hunt" for geese last year at Glen Elder. As long as I understand you correctly, the "special hunts" only take place inside the refuge. As long as you are outisde the refuge, which was pretty well marked in December of 2007, you should be safe.

The free permits are just a way for KDWP to see who is using the area and what they are harvesting. I filled out one for the public hunting area of Tuttle Creek on Friday, when I was hunting near the Olsburg marsh. You fill out the top part when you start hunting, and then fill out the bottom portion when you are done. In my case, it was 0 pheasants, 0 quail.:(

If you're working the public hunting areas at Glen Elder, I would look for the thickest, nastiest cover you can find. The pretty cover gets pounded pretty hard. That's my experience from Glen Elder...

Thanks Toad,

The areas that we wanted to hunt but were unsure of the legality of it had signs posted that said KDWP Pubic Hunting I think. However, these areas were fenced in and gated off so you couldn't drive into them. They did have a walk-in type gate so it looked like it was ok to hunt there just not ok to drive back there. One such area had deer carcasses piled up close to the gate area, that was not a great sight... I think we were in a spot where it was OK to hunt anytime during the season. What do you think? We were first timers there and were going off of KDWP pdf maps that we printed off that day, which were not the greatest. Next time we go we will definitely take someone that's been there or try to meet up with one of you guys on here to help us learn the lay of the land.

We didn't encounter too many pheasants south of Osborne until we were leaving for the day... My friend was driving along the dirt roads and started freaking out, I looked up and there were literally 20-30 pheasants flushing off the dirt road at one intersection. We got out just to see the site, w/out guns, and looked up at the sky to see flocks of pheasants flying overhead going to their roost for the evening. It was an amazing AND frustrating site. We typically hunt NE KS and if we see ten birds in a day we are very pleased. Seeing probably close to 50 birds in that one area was unbelievable and we will certainly be back there a couple of times next year.

CZ - I'll look tonite and see if I can scan in and post a pic of the Glen Elder wildlife area. If not, next time you're out there stop into Wayne's Sporting Goods in Glen Elder, I believe he has brochures which show the wildlife area. There are some areas down near the dam on the south side that have daily permits to hunt, and some on the N side which are special hunt areas. If you were down the SW end, away from the dam, most of that is open to hunting. I was just out there from 1/1 - 1/10, put up quite a few birds, all on public land. Not many roosters, but I saw some every day. No quail.

JJlab-that would be awesome, thanks for your help! That spot we wanted to hunt was SW of the dam I'm sure, it looked great...we will be better prepared next time. Hunting around here is almost non-existent anymore so I see many more trips W and NW in our future!

I didn't forget about you guys, just keep forgetting to bring the brochure of Glen Elder to work with me so I can scan it in.

Glen Elder not good this season

Bird numbers were just not there just north of Glen Elder. I hunted just north of glen elder on public and private land twice this past season and was not very successful. We stayed in Beloit kansas and hunted in mitchell, and jewell counties and did not do as good as usual. I hunt hard, fast, and cover a lot of ground and we had to walk a ton just to get a half of limit of pheasant and a covey here and there. Its sad but i don't know whats happening.

Did anyone have much luck around glen elder late season? I went Last weekend of December and the third weekend of January with minimal success.

I hunted around Glen Elder from New Years Day until Jan 10th. It was hit and miss with a lot of walking to find a few birds. Most of the birds I did find were in the thick nasty stuff along the waterways, but I did also find bunches in cover that didn't look like it would hold anything. Saw a lot of hens, so that's hopefully a good sign for this fall.
