Future WPRA'S

For conversation's sake I was curious to see where some of you think the next WPRA should be created and why! While the most obvious areas with the highest potential have already been chosen I feel there are some areas left in the state that can rival those areas with what they have to offer!

Bradford County is where I feel the next WPRA should be located. The amount of set aside land is very large! Due to the windfalls that farmers are recieving from the big gas companies they have little need to farm and in return let their fields sit idle making perfect habitat! It's not just localized either..it's more regional..you see this throughout the entire county! Some parts of Bradford County were once considerd Class A Pheasant range! I think Bradford County is something special waiting to happen!

What do you all think?

I really don't know about the habitat and CREP land in different parts of the state including Bradford. Is there any talk of adding more WPRA's? There is one in Franklin county that has yet to get any birds. I know that area lost a lot of CREP land so maybe they won't get them. It doesn't help when birds from the west can't be trapped because of weather.

I think the Gettysburg area might be able to hold birds. They are removing trees and putting in more grassland to get the area to look like it did during the Civil War. There are parts of the battlefield that are designated as important birding areas for grassland birds.

I wonder how the quail plan is coming along? I have not heard anything about it for quite some time.

It is my understanding that Bradford County was considered as a Wild Pheasant Recovery Area. It has the most CREP of any County and as mentioned,a lot of land is returning to fields and sitting idle. It resembles South East Pa. of the 70's. One of the drawbacks is that there isn't a Pheasant Forever Chapter in the county. It's a shame, this was once Class A pheasant range and with some habitat work and the release of wild birds I think it could really take off. I think another area that was discussed was in the North West part of the State.
The lack of wild birds trapped and transfered from the Mid-West surely has slowed things down. Maybe if things continue as they are, we can have an in state trap n transfer, who would have thought!

I love the idea of a WILD captive breeding program!

Fldbred, we are considering the first interstate trap and transfer this winter. We are looking at 50 birds for the first year. We also hope to get birds from Montana this year as they are reporting higher numbers.

A trap n transfer using WILD Ringnecks born and bred right here in Pa., can you believe that! Just a decade ago that would have been unthinkable. My hat goes off to you Mr. Appleman.

Man is it a breath of fresh air to (once again) hear story's about a state actively trying to boost/bring back wild pheasant numbers!!!

Keep up the good work PA:thumbsup::cheers:
