Hi There,
I moved to Illinois a couple years ago for work after I graduated from college. I hunted behind Vizsla's growing up and they were all great, but I absolutely fell in love with the way my Grandfathers most recent dog worked, so I told him that when she was ready to have pups that is where I wanted to get my first Vizsla. Long story short, I picked him up last July and had an amazing first season with him. I hunted him along side his sisters and mother back in Iowa last year and he did amazing, he pointed the majority of the birds we shot, and with his endurance and speed, he was the first to nearly every downed bird. I love to get him out and work him, fortunately we have land in Iowa to do this on, but unfortunately we don't go back as often as I'd like to work him. Not being from Illinois, it is hard to find any land to hunt or even find anyone who does hunt in my neck of the woods with all this crop ground and mowed ditches. I found this site in my search and hope that I can contribute to any new or potential Vizsla owners. I look forward to hearing about success stories others have had in my area, and also to learn more about pheasant hunting. I've lived a pretty sheltered life so far only hunting behind Vizsla's and been spoiled with good ground to hunt in Iowa as I grew up.

Welcome! Depending on where you are located in IL and how far you are from Iowa and the land you own you might want to look north into Wisconsin. The state has a lot of public ground and they have a good pheasant program. Upland hunting is tough in IL from what I here but if your close enough to Iowa or Wisconsin you should be in good shape. This is a great site and we have a good number of members located in your area that should be able to help you.

Good Luck this season!

I just read your other post..you can cross out visiting Wisconsin..I would head west! Thought maybe you were around Chicago

Ah, looks like I failed to include where I am in Illinois! I moved to Jacksonville, IL in Morgan County. it's actually about 3 hrs south of where I was from in Iowa, so unfortunately even further from Wisconsin. I'm roughly an hour North of St. Louis and would be happy to find anything or anyone within a couple hours from here.

Thanks for the Welcome!

Upland hunting is tough in IL but it can be done..there are a few people on here that do really well! I would save some vacation time for heading back to Iowa because you are going to want to spend some time hunting there. I would also look into Missouri particularly for quail..the state cares about quail. Look into the Quail Emphasis Areas.

Welcome to the site.;)

As you already know, finding land to hunt is very difficult here in IL. IL has potential, but unfortunately Chi-town has a lot of pull on the politics of the state. ILDNR is not a priority with them.

Regardless, there are some public hunting/controlled sites. Have you looking into that option at all?

I hunt primarily in Missouri. But hunt Illinois and Kansas as well. Kansas is by far my favorite with the multi-species of gamebirds. I hunt in Mt. Sterling Illinois with I dont think is too far from you. I also hunt two vizslas. My older female is one of the better dogs Ive ever had as far as being versatile.
