Food plots and plums

Well, the sorghum food plots are poor this year. It was just so dry that it took forever for the sorghum to grow much and by the time it did, the weeds were escaping the herbicide and now it is good cover with marginal food. The plum hedgerow has many plants loaded with plums. Everything out there seems to eat plums! About 60 days (59) until the opener!

Good stuff! Nice to see the fruits of your labor.

I tried to throw together a food plot for the birds this year with a bag or two of bird seed - mostly milo with sunflower and millet mixed in. I was looking for the cheap stuff as it is heavier milo.

I think it’s something I’ll try again - I just need to work on the prep/planting side of it better. The first 3 pics show the components coming up, but to be honest, the field was mostly overtaken by ragweed, which is fine in the summer, but not so much come winter. Oh well…I now know better after my first attempt. Next year should be much improved.

I was also busy recently trying to control common tansy - lots of that to go around - and snapped a couple of pics of some goodies for the birds. Unplanted elderberry, joe pye-weed, and black cherry.

Next year the land will be in CRP, so it’s been fun learning about the habitat and trying to strategize for the future habitat improvements. It’s just as fun as hunting for me 😁
