First time bird dog owner

That picture was from his first ever waterfowl hunt. He was our only dog that morning and got 14 geese and 2 mallards. He had both land and water retrieves. He really was not sure on the first one, but figured them out quickly and didn’t let their size get to him.
The first yellow lab I had was a great goose dog.He loved to run down big geese!! Great dog, he loved to hunt. You have a beautiful lab.

My yellow lab swam all the way across the Missouri River, onto shore, grabbed a 15 pound Canadian honker that wasn't dead, and swam back with it. Amazing retrieve!

Just hunt a lot.No need for training.
There is some truth to that.
During my sheep hunting days I invested most of my time training my body
for grueling hikes with a heavy backpack for August Dall sheep hunting.
I just hunted my labs and they did great.

But there is so much fun in training labs (and competing)...
multiple marks, blind retrieves, etc.
The nice thing about labs is they can be taught so much with a couple of bumpers,
any field or farm pond.
And training a pup is so much fun:
