First rooster if the season - Drummond Flats

Third time hunting at Drummond Flats since the season opened, Dec.1st. First two times out I missed a rooster each time that were gimmies. Dog hard pointed the first one and I jumped the second, both within shooting range, (hate it when that happens). Although, I have seen more Quail coveys this year than any other year. I did get a few but missed a bunch also. More & heavier cover this year and it makes for a tougher hunt when you're 78. Ha! It becomes difficult when you do not have GPS for your dog and can't see him in the thick cover. With that said I still look forward to the hunt each time and count it a gift.
Last year I hunted Drummond 25 times shot 5 roosters, lost another and missed four.
For those of you wanting to hunt Drummond be patient, put in the miles and you should be successful. Opening day there were few hunters which was a surprise to me, although it opened on a Monday. Today, Saturday there were more hunters in the field but only heard one shot.
Am grateful that I can still put in a few miles w/GunnR, my GSP, and occasionally scratch out a bird or two. If you need additional info you can contact me at (580)614-1372.

I have hunted Drummond twice this year and only scratched out one rooster so far. Flushed 3 others and missed one. I always have trouble here with having quail loads in and then a big rooster flushes and taunts me. Love your posts and you inspire me to keep going! I'll see ya out there someday!

78 and still chasing them...my man! You really deserve less walking and more birds....drive north further, it sounds like you have earned it. Let those few birds be and get after them where there are plenty to chase.

So far this season I have hunted the flats 6 times, but only one Rooster and a few Quail. I have hunted closer to home (Okeene), but we only have Quail and no Pheasant. I usually get into birds but I end up doing what I do best, missing. The drive and anticipation is as strong as ever, however, as stated in another post the knees are a little shaky. Ha
Happy to see other posts on the Oklahoma platform. Call me sometime and we'll meet up. As you know there is an awful lot of walking for little reward, however, the greatest reward for me is seeing GunnR work.
I'll be out tomorrow, Tuesday!! 🤙
