First Kansas Trip

Heading to Kansas this December for the first time. I am primarily chasing bobs but would like to get into some roosters if possible too. Currently looking at central to north central part of the state. Is it possible to get into both birds here? Also, when looking at dates I did not take the gun deer season into consideration so that will be going on when I am there. Anyone have any experience upland hunting during the gun deer season? Will be mostly hunting WIHA and will not hunt anything with any other vehicle in it.

Wear your orange you should be fine. The first weekend of deer season I like to sleep in and then hit steel shot areas.
The second weekend I don’t worry to much about. By the second weekend the birds have had a rest. It’s a good time to get after them.

Westie is right about the areas to hunt. I'd also suggest looking at the brood survey when they publish it (should be soon).

As for deer season, I'd stay away from the state ground surrounding the major reservoirs and focus exclusively on WIHA. Before putting dogs down I'd survey all the road frontage looking for other vehicles. It's a good practice anyway, but I think it's extra important during deer season. Orange on you and orange on the dog and go hunt!

Were you hunting December during deer season? Beautiful photo. Good luck to you next month!
Thanks, I was not, sorry for not clarifying that. It was mid-late November just like this years trip. But we ran into a couple of archery deer hunters on the public. We were N Central. Wanted to go further west towards Colby but we got on birds and stayed put close to our lodging.

I believe brood survey is out now. I did take a look and overlapped my onX pins that I already had escouted and looks like the areas I have pinned had good increases in both pheasants and bobwhite broods. Thanks for the info on staying away from major reservoirs

I like to hunt deer but have mostly stopped and been turned off by how most others are so aggresive over it.

Suffice it to say you'll find many deertards as I call them - but there will be some good people. If I was you I'd not be in the wide open hunting during rifle season -- If you're in more broken ground with canyons and an inability for people to road hunt and shoot from their truck you'll be safer. Just my .02

I've hunted during rifle deer plenty for birds - but as I stated - be wary of places and general areas where it's easy for the deertard to stop his truck and shoot from the window.

Goes without saying - If you normally dont hunt w much orange -- Go out looking like a pumpkin while rifle season is on.

This is exactly what I worry about. I’m going solo now so not as much dog power. Will be planning to hunt for just 3 days now. I will have lots of orange on me and the dogs. I would have thought the more open areas would be better as you can see that there wouldn’t be deer hunters there from farther distances. Anyone been hunting yet? How are numbers looking? I’m focusing on northern part of the state most likely north central ish

If you get on birds on public land that late in the season you'll have earned them. When hunting during deer season best practice is if you see an old beat up pickup that looks like a local and his kid move on. If it's a shiny Texas, Louisiana, or Georgia plates you go right on ahead and hunt it😉

I was out there last year. The last weekend of gun season and the rest of that week we didn't see hardly anyone hunting. You should be fine. But like other said you really earn you birds by that time of year.
