Well Ive been lurking for a few weeks and figured Id post up finally. A friend of mine offered to take me hunting for pheasant, and we finally made it out. We hit WIA in Morgan county. We saw several birds. Flushed half a dozen when we parked at the first field. Saw a rooster running off in the distance. And I flushed a rooster, but was took excited to pull the gun up. :( Needless to say Im hooked, and I wish my lab was trained. I doubt Ill make it out again this year, but Im going to try. Maybe this time Ill be better prepared. I need to read up on the birds, and where to find them as well.

Any tips, tricks, general direction for CO pheasant hunting would be welcome too...

Do not give up!!! If you can master Colorado, you can hunt anywhere!!!! Read up and ask questions about dog training, even if is for your next pup, so you can hit the ground running!!!

Hey Jeepnut,
Welcome to the forum and check out the recent thread "What am I doing wrong" as there are some good tips in there. There are also some great books out there on pheasant hunting--ask Santa for them. But above all, just keep going out.

Awesome that you liked it! Why can't you get out again... it is a long season!

I am by no means a "purist"... and some guys might totally disagree, but as far as training your lab... (from my own experience)

If you can just het her to run around, but STAY WITHIN GUN RANGE! you have an acceptable hunt partner. She will cover 10 times the ground you will, and should help to find downed birds. All in all, it is still more effective and more fun with a non pheasant lab, as long as she does not head out and flush birds out of range.

PS: if you ever have the opportunity to hunt with guys that have REAL bird dogs... don't hesitate to leave your dog at home/in the truck, at least for some fields... It is amazing to watch great dogs work, and I don't want my lab to go busting into someone else's point...

With a 4 month old and a 3 year old daughters, it takes some planning to head east from Denver. But Im going to try and make it out at least once more.

Our lab is from Kansas and clearly is from hunting stock. She always has her nose down and will stay within shotgun range when walking. She has always been a house dog though.

Thanks all for the encouragement. I'm definitely hooked. Ive been a flyfisherman for years now, and understand the idea of putting in your time to get to the point where things make sense.

Glad to hear you had a good 1st hunt in colorado. It took my brother and I a couple of years to get our first bird each (we were not hunting with a dog at the time). I can understand the difficulty to get out with young kids. I also have 2 kids; a 3yr old daughter and a 1.5yr old son. My wife is also a hunter and with understanding let's me have a few days a year to chase birds. Maybe your wife will have interest in time?
Glad to hear you have a dog that will pick up the trade easily. Labs are great family dogs and awesome friends in the field.
Any chance of hunting weekdays?
