It's South Dakotas turn for the forrest fire outbreak
Late today a C-130 outfitted for retardant drops crashed fighting the White Draw Fire in SW SD about 20 miles south of my house 2 survive but 4 are missing---a very sad day indeed
The fire danger is growing worse almost daily, fires start easily and grow very fast and are resistant to controll. There was a thunder storm late yesterday in the area of the fire the plane that crashed was fighting and now there are two fires about 5 miles apart--the new one is already 150 acres
Newcastle WY just across the SD border 37 miles west of me has a 5000 acre plus fire 2 miles out of town and Newcastle may have to be evacuated.
A housing developement 4 to 6 miles inside the SD border on US 16 (about 15 miles east of Newcastle WY ) had a fire start yesterday and at least 4 and likely a lot more homes burned and the fire is out of controll.
We have 5 to 10 alarms everyday --some false but to many are real ---our local fire crews both VFD and the USFS get most of them out when they are small-- less that a couple of acres.
I'm very concerned that with the combination of hot dry weather--fire fighting resources streached thin--and the Pine Beetle killed forrest in the Black Hills is going to lead to a BAD FIRE SEASON.
