It's South Dakotas turn for the forrest fire outbreak
Late today a C-130 outfitted for retardant drops crashed fighting the White Draw Fire in SW SD about 20 miles south of my house 2 survive but 4 are missing---a very sad day indeed:(

Yes very sad. Those firefighters are heroes. We will pray for their families.

What is the fire situation like out there? I know they have a lot of prime combustible material with all the pine beetle infestation.

The fire danger is growing worse almost daily, fires start easily and grow very fast and are resistant to controll. There was a thunder storm late yesterday in the area of the fire the plane that crashed was fighting and now there are two fires about 5 miles apart--the new one is already 150 acres

Newcastle WY just across the SD border 37 miles west of me has a 5000 acre plus fire 2 miles out of town and Newcastle may have to be evacuated.

A housing developement 4 to 6 miles inside the SD border on US 16 (about 15 miles east of Newcastle WY ) had a fire start yesterday and at least 4 and likely a lot more homes burned and the fire is out of controll.

We have 5 to 10 alarms everyday --some false but to many are real ---our local fire crews both VFD and the USFS get most of them out when they are small-- less that a couple of acres.

I'm very concerned that with the combination of hot dry weather--fire fighting resources streached thin--and the Pine Beetle killed forrest in the Black Hills is going to lead to a BAD FIRE SEASON.

I hate being so negative about it but------:(

Jim, it was just a matter of time before the bomb went off. Same thing happened in Boundary waters recently.

Foresters did a good job to get the fuel away from buildings and mitigate the risk a little.

Nature has its way and what looks bad now may be beautiful in the not too distant future.
