Finding downed birds

My dog is pretty good at finding wounded birds, in fact, if she can't find the the one that is wounded she will find one that isn't wounded, pounce on it, and bring that one back. When we give her the command "Dead Bird" she will deliver a bird one way or another.

This should help hold ammo costs at a minimum!

Bobeyerite you need to find a snake avoidance class and get him vaccinated. My guy was having a great day a few months ago and his last bird was a snake. Its a terrible situation you don't want to deal with. Also find out where the emergency vet clinic is near you and if they carry the antivenom. Big if.

The vaccine is controversial as to its effectiveness but 3 emergency vets I spoke with say dogs who have been vaccinated do better with treatment. I would call around and form your own opinion. The problem is there are no clinical studies as nobody wants to volunteer their dog for such a thing.

Yep! I winged a mtn quail last year and my dog showed no interest in the buck brush I was sure it was in, instead he kept sticking his head down a hole in the roots of an old rotted tree stump. This may not seem bad but we were in an area where we encountered a huge timber rattler just a week before. I kicked the stump over and found the quail (no snake) but it got me worried and he got the vaccination a week later. I'm still looking for a avoidance class but we should find one before quail season starts again.
