Finally got my CO Limit!!!

So I decided to go out Friday morning with my brother hitting the WIA's. The weather was good with a nice breeze and I am also learning to not get in the field at the crack of daylight. So we stopped at the first walk in field around 8:30am to let the dogs get out the initial burst of energy, also to do their deeds. As I pulled up to stop, we seen about 15-20 roosters come out of the ditch and fly into the field. So we let the dogs out and started to work that field. Maximus, my pointing lab locked up some really nice points and my brother ended up with two out of that field in about 20 mins.

I told him that I was going to start at the top of the field and just work my GSP pup (Leonidas aka Leo), since I wanted him to get into birds all on his own, for some wild bird training cause he is just over a year and has not been exposed to too many wild pheasants. He dropped me and the pup off up top. About the first 30 yards into the field Leo gets really birdy and two Roosters flushed, one left, one right. I picked the one on my right and missed the first shot but did get him on the second. Leo retrieved it perfect and brought it back to me. I was a proud Dad at that moment :D. That right there, would have been all I needed out of the day. But, I was glad I had got one, since my brother had already gotten two and was close to his limit . After Leo got that bird, it was like the light came on and he worked hard all day, like a machine after birds. It was awesome. Here is the pic of Leo and his first official bird all on his own. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics but it was all I had.

So we ended up hitting another field, I kept Max in the kennel and was using Leo only in the next field. I ended up with one more out of the next field. So my brother and I had two each by noon. We decided to head back to the field we started at in the morning. We came back their around 3:30pm, as we had not seen much else in the other spots we were walking.

We jumped in the field. I brought both dogs this time with us. About 40 yards into it, I get a point from my Lab Max and Leo backing him on it...which was awesome by the way. A rooster flushed between my brother and I and my bro hit it on his first shot....woohoo we were excited he had just got his limit. All we needed was one more from me. to be done. We walk another 15 yards and there is my pointing lab Max, on point to my left. I circle around to get in front of him, as I get about 5 yards from him a big rooster flushes up in the sunset and bang ...dead. Max retrieved him to me and I put him in my bag and walked out of the field smiling all the way back to the truck. My brother and I had just both limited, it could not have come from a better day in CO, as it was my Brothers birthday the next day. The dog work was simply incredible.

Sorry about the long post, but I wanted to share a successful day in the field. It was truly one of my best hunting days to date. A couple more pics to tell the story.

Cograts---a beautiful day to remember your pups success.
I went out late yesterday to a small SD public and took 5 Pudelpointers. Must be nuts. Two are adults and 3 pups. Two pups will be gone by end of week and thought I would wear them out a little. They are not quite five months old (Red and Lefty). Axel and Poco are 4 and 3. Flirt is 8 months.
Was not really hopeful about seeing much as we took a couple of birds off this small patch last week and that was all we saw. Walked a half mile to end and worked back to truck near the fenceline we had not covered. Flirt worked a bird just to my right, pointed briefly and then it blew up in my face. I was totally looking southwest directly into the low sun and thought it was a hen until it veered right over the fence and the adjacent plowed corn. Popped it good and Flirt immediately found a way thru the woven wire and headed back. Axel wanted to lend a hand, but Flirt was proud of her third retrieve and avoided him, bring it to hand. Headed for the truck, watered 'em (very warm out) down and went home to catch the second half of Brady vs. Tebow.
Everybody had a good time and believe me, that field got covered. Two dogs stayed home, Bailey and Mazzie, but they hunted Sat.

Nice looking pups Buck!!! Sounds like you had a GREAT day in the field as well . I can't wait to get him back in the field. I think I will be taking them out the day after Xmas for one of my Xmas presents ;).

Good for you Scoelki! A pup's first wild bird all on his own is a BIG deal for dad's like us. Nearly brings a happy tear to my eye every time. Congrats on a great hunt as well and thanks for sharing the story and pics:cheers:

BTW, you can't make a hunt report too long IMO. Others may disagree and prefer to see it in score board fashion, but I prefer the essay format:thumbsup:

Very nice.

You can improve that image on your computer a bit with the standard image correction menu. Use "sharpen" two or there times, then if you have a "gamma" scale, you can perk up the contrast just a bit.

Nice that you had any camera for the first bird.

awesome job

Hi Scoelki, great job.
I noticed you mentioned not getting in the field at the crack of dawn.
I have never had as good of luck first thing in the morning, generally I got to watch pheasants fly from roosting to feeding. It is a hard habit to break but do you have better luck after a few hours of daylight?

I have hunted for a lot of years but am always looking for advise and input.

Thanks,
RussnHunter

Hey that Max looks familiar!!:):):D He kinda looks like Snakey Jake!!

That looks like alot of fun right there!!

I was the same way. Leaving at 4am in the morning to get there at first light. All I did was walk fields all morning and seen very little birds. End up being tired by 2pm and leaving when all the birds are showing up after eating. I am not saying true for everyone but now I get into the fields around 8-8:30 am sometimes 9am and I have the extra energy to hunt them till 4pm. That is what I like to do :D. The earliest rooster I have ever shot was at 8:30 am. I usually get most of my birds later in the day. Good luck and happy Hunting!.
