Fillmore's first pheasants

What a day! Fillmore got her first birds Saturday. I am so excited and proud. Had a ton of fun. No wind = a little tough conditions, but she did well. Good patterning. First two birds flushed wild, but she hupped at the flush and even the shot. We lightly worked on that drill with just some tennis balls and a dokken, but not a ton. I was so surprised! Hunted a hard 2 hours and called it a day since it was getting warm. She wanted to keep going but I knew it was time. Little gal was passed out the whole rest of the day.

Thanks all for the tips and help leading up till now!
Our hard work has paid off. Still a long ways to go obviously, but I'm really looking forward to a great season ahead. This little 14mo really impressed me. Still can't get that picture out of my head of her first retrieve. That bird looked huge compared to her little 28#s!

That's great I'm very impressed.:10sign::coolpics:

I was too!!

then she broke and chased a couple. but I can handle that for her first day out. She's learning. I don't expect her to be steady this year anyhow, but if I can get her to be some, then all the better. Anyhow, day was really good. We were in some nasty thick stuff and I couldn't see her much, just listened for the rustling. :) but she made a great retrieve that blew me away. bird landed in some 5-6 foot high junk about 25-30 yards or so out. She went charging after it, and I could hear those wings flapping. well, those wings stopped flapping and it got real quiet . . . then I just heard a little rustling as she tried to find her way back to me through that mini jungle. she came out to me in the short stuff and delivered that bird to hand. :thumbsup: (her first two she dropped at my feet) I think she was proud she showed that rooster who's boss!

some shots of what we were in. I can see the advantage for guys with bigger dogs like labs. If you had a pointer, you'd have a hell of a time finding your dog. I guess that's what the beepers are for.

Very good CD, Happy to hear you enjoyed your outing and the dog is showing a ton of promise. Pretty soon you will be going hunting just to watch the dog do her wonders in field...........Bob

Beautiful, Effective Dog

Great pic of your beautiful dog. Congratulations on your good hunt.

Thick stuff allright.
That stuff I said about getting the dog to hup anywhere as a pup. That is exactly why it will be easier to fully steady that dog when the time comes, you seen a flash of that right away. She will most likely keep breaking this fall but don't sweat it. Just keep up on your yard work along with hunting. the hupping on comand in the yard with praise etc. And when you do steady her you will have that foundation set. And it will go way easier when you do. If you can make a place board and start making her hup on that as well for food etc. Then start making her sit on it in the yard for her spot to do retrieves to and from. You will find out why later. It is a great way to steady the dog your self. But as you did with hup in the yard, you need to enstill the hup on the board for later too. There is a simple meathod to the madness, it just takes time. Doing all this seemingly goofy stuff makes it go so much better down the road. And also don't over do her hunting this fall, keep it shorter and smaller areas with plenty of rest. It can turn a young dog off too if way over worked. Then with all the things learned this next off season you will have one hell of a gun dog. :thumbsup: Nice job.

Thanks Ken. I've built a couple place boards and have been integrating them into our training. I was actually about to post on what type of training should we be working on during the season. You must have read my mind. I'll keep at it and keep ya posted. Catching that glimpse of her future steadiness just makes me want to continue in the process. I know a lot of guys don't care one way or the other, but it sure seems nice to know where she is and be able to send her when all's clear. Now if I can just find some time to get back out in the fields...

thanks all. Hoping to get her back out there. soon. Wishing you all the best this fall!:cheers:

This really sounds like where I want to be in a few years. I would be great to be able to have the time to train and run dogs like you guys do! I will sure be following your progress CD because it looks like you have the right track. I am new to the gun dog idea, I mean my uncle always had them when we were little but, I think we were more focused on learnig the sport instead of learning the sport of gun dogs. One day when we get back to the states we will think of doing this. For now, have fun and congrats on the first of many hunts.

My uncle always had the dogs as I was a kid too. The wife wanted a dog, and I was getting back into hunting, so it was a win win for both of us. First bird dog myself, so it's been a learning experience for sure. fun one though. come back safe soon!

We are on our way home! Saw a posting for a GSP today. Wife does not think it is a great idea right away! There will be others.
See ya'll soon.
