Enjoyable trip...

My wife and I left her mothers house as soon as the Thanksgiving chores were done on Thursday. Took a leisurely drive out to the cabin. She had been at her moms house for the whole week, taking care of business. On this trip out, my mind was churning at the thought of nice weather, walleyes and pheasants..

Friday morning found me with the boat in tow leaving at day break for the river.... After a glorious drive up to the dam, I found myself with the whole river to myself and water running. Usually, thats does not bode well for the walleyes. But, on this day, I couldnt buy a bite. I left the water, totally dumbfounded as everything was perfect... Oh well, time to change clothes, boot up, put on the hunting gear and follow the dogs around..

I drove to the first WIA I was going to hit, which was a mile long by 1/2 deep. this place has everything, food plots, grassland, cattail marshes.. tree lines.. the works.. I decided to wade into the cattail first, to try to drive the birds to the more workable cover for me and the dogs.. 50 yards from the truck, old dog is gone in the marsh. new dog cruises by, and now shes gone in the cattails. I forge ahead another 15 yards, and there they both are, locked up on a clump of reeds about 15 feet around.. I walk up, and watch their heads twitch to a sound, that I cannot hear. I step one step in, and a rooster jumps up immediatley to my front. I hear other birds exiting to my left as my 686 comes into contact with my shoulder and simultaneously I scratch the trigger and the rooster falls to the ground. I have no idea how many birds exited to my left, but I know I heard at least two other roosters cackling their displeasure at having their mid morning nap so rudely interrupted.. Breez delivers to hand, while Ellie goes on about her business.. I glance back at the truck 70 yards away and smile..

We work our way along the edge, avoiding the heavy marsh, hoping to ambush a couple more nappers, but to no avail. I move out to the grasslands, working from edge inward, and then back to the corners. Second pass, Breez comes flying by at warp speed 9, and comes to a halt right in front of me so fast that I almost get whiplash watching her. I think to myself that this bird is tight.. I walk up ten steps, nothing, I get 10 yards in front of her, and she relocates, and points again,, I walk up again, and she relocates. This time her tail is ever so slightly wagging, which isnt usualy a good sign.. She breaks point, and then starts trailing,, which turns into a all out search pattern now. I look at this as a good thing....

We work our way thru the middle and then funnel ourselves to the corner, trying to pinch them into trying to hide instead of run. All the while, the trucks getting further and further away.. One more corner to work, and it appears we have them cornered. Breez is locked up 80 yards away, and Ellie is locked up 25. I walk up to Ellie and a rooster breaks out airborns towards Breez.. eveything aligns naturally, and the shot strikes home, sending the bird to the ground, about the time all heck breaks loose. Breezs bird busts loose, which is just as well, because shes on her way to make the fetch. About the time she gets him in her mouth, another rooster gets up behind me. This is the luckiest bird to get up within gun range for me this year, as I let both barrels go at him and he continues on his way, unscathed. To date this year, Ive lost one bird and this is my first miss. Totally uncharacteristic of me.. Breez delivers to hand, and off we go, happy with a little weight in the old vest..
Out trip back to the truck finds no further bird contact.. I head to a little irrigation pivot corner that is always good for one bird, and today is no different. 15 Yards from the truck, Breez is gone. The pivot corner is milo and kochia, about half and half. (if I was farming for birds, Id be buying kochia seeds.;)) I hit the beeper collar, and with the beep, a rooster takes flight heading for the adjoining property across the gravel road. I dump him on my side of the road, and he hits with a thud on the opposite side. motionless... Strangely, Breez hasnt made the retrieve.. I tweet the whistles a few times as I walk across the road. I pick up the rooster, and a hen gets up in the field, and as she flies away, Breez is yelping,(which she does when I dont shoot) lol.. I call her out of the field, snap a quick picture and we are on our way.. Hey pops, look what I found:

The wife and I meet up with fellow UPH member Tanner10 and enjoy some great conversation, a pizza (or 2) and a couple adult beverages at Jackies, and the end to a near perfect day 1 comes to a close..

Day two next:

Day two found me hooked onto the boat again, headed for the river.. (im stubborn that way) A gorgeous day on the prairie is in store.

Menu for the day is:

Waters running, and Im pumped to make up for some lost time from the day before. just like the previous day, it was not to be. I fished 3 hours, and snagged one carp.. But, it was fun to be there, none the less..

Day two was going to be a repeat performance of the prior day. Same WIA, same results. Walked out with two birds. The miss category grew by a couple hash marks, and I lost my second bird of the season. Lots of bird contact on this day on this piece of property though.. Since I only get 15 yards into the irrigation pivot the day before, I decided to see if I could go to the well one more time.. This day had a north wind, and a full sun, so I instinctively headed the opposite direction down the south fenceline. No sooner had I tapped the car door shut and a rooster exits 25 yards from my truck and sails out into the prairie, not wanting to play with me today.. Breez is stalking down the fenceline with me in tow.. we get 90 yards down the fence and she freezes into a locked position. I walk in and two roosters jump up. I dump the one on the right, and Breez makes the retrieve, and we walk back to the truck.. I snap a couple pics, and we head back home.

So beautiful.. I wish I could wind him up again, and set him free..

There has been a couple sunflower fields around a WIA that I have been waiting to get harvested, and on the way back, I run into a couple combines.. I stop the last guy with the head on the trailer and ask him if they are going for the sunflowers, and he said "yup" Hows the fishing? LOL.. (boat in tow still) Not going to do that again.....

Day 3 found me washing the boat first thing in the morning from towing it around the previous day. I left right at sunrise, anxious to get a morning in scouting instead of fishing....

It was very "quiet" for a beautiful morning.. I did not see a rooster until almost 930.. 945 found me in the parking area where there was a sunflower field the previous day... As I am sitting there, a flock of pheasants flies in from two different directions and lands in a little creek bottom to get a drink.. Hmmm...Heres your sign!..

10 am finds Breez and I (Ellie opted to stay on the couch this morning.. 1st time ever.) of course, down in the creek bottom. When we entered, they exited.. all of them.. I put my head down and forged forward, confident that withn the recent harvest, there were to be more birds... 1/4 mile in Breez is working to my right, and a rooster gets up to me left.. Wow, she missed a bird.... We move onward around the perimeter of the flower field . working to the point of a small draw, Breez locks up, tail quivering.. (quivering is good) I walk in and stand there, 8 feet in front of Breez, with her looking right between my legs.. I just stand there ina mexican standoff with her. I dont move, she dont move...OK, I guess its my job to wade in.. I get mid step and thats all the rooster can take.. he presses off to my right, and I let go with the skeet tube. Nothing.. Ok IC barks, and again, nothing..Wow, what a whiff.. I break the action about the time 2 hens and a rooster decide to make a break for freedom.... I stand there and watch them fly out of sight.

We work another half mile to a large pond ringed with cattails.. We work down one side with no indication of any activity, which is odd. We get to the narrow end of it, and Breez locks up.. I walk in a a rooster makes flight. I drop him, and Breez delivers.. Were now 2 miles away from the truck, with one bird in the vest and a long dry walk back.. We head our across the prairie, and I allow Breez to really churn up the turf.. Were 1/4 mile back and shes 200 yards casting left to right. She drops down into a gully, and disappears... shortly afterwards, 2 cackling roosters come flying out of the gully and head for the pond.. I call Breez in, what to do? Youre out here hunting, go hunting, so off over the hill we go to the pond we just walked.. Worked the edge, and collected one, as the other one flew back to the flower field.. So, back we go towards the truck.. Half an hour later, finds me approaching the original creek bottom only this time from the high side. Breez breaks over the large hill and is out of sight.. I continue down the slope, working to my right towards the truck.. Breez is nowhere to be seen...A rooster jumps up on the crest of the hill, and comes cruising by over my head with Breez on his tail.. I can only think that she had him pointed, so I pull a big lead on him, and let go with the top bbl.. His wings fold up and he hits the ground on the lip of the creek.... hard.. How they can hit that hard, and gather their senses up so quickly is beyond me. Breez is right on him, and after a short trail, a short chase, she brings me our 3rd bird of the day..

Time to head home, which gets harder and harder every time..

Quit your day job!

You should be writing for a living! Great story, great photos. I am eaten up with envy!

Reddog, I hear the walleye counts are down.......

Theyll be there.... so will I..We have a history together...

Thanks for the kind words. I dont know if anyone likes to read stuff like I write or not, or if they just want to get to the meat of a report with a kill count, location and the amount of time it took to kill them all..

Those kind of reports are not my style. I like to interject a little reverence to the quarry, the hunt, the land, and the beauty... I almost did not post the first picture with Breez carrying one and the two others laying in the dirt. In order to make up for a tasteless picture(for me) , I added the one of me holding one out in my hand..;)

When I see reports like yours, I try to be sure there will be no interruptions before I even start reading. I see the birds, the wirehair, and the cover. I can even hear the roosters cackle and the wing-beat of the hens. These posts must be absolute GOLD to those who don't/can't make it out often.

Now the fish/hunt combo......wow! That's pretty darned adventurous if you think about it. A fella with a boat and bird dogs to take care of in the same trip is both motivated and organized! Your stories and my imagination have me out on a river in SD, fishing for walleye. Then dropping off the boat and heading to my favorite bird haunts.....it's not as good as actually feeling the fish on the line, nor does it satisfy me as taking a bird over my own dogs would, but a well-written report provides a much needed "get-away" for this factory worker.

Thank you for taking the time to share all you do:cheers:

congrats reddog!!! well happy to see somebody was able to knock down some birds out there after thanksgiving!!! love the pics & the story!!!

read my report reddog i got my ass handed to me my father also the birds were way wild wear i was 4-10 empty rifle cartridges at every parking area i hunted & birds flushing 75-100 yards out damn near every wear... got 3-5 shots each out there no dead birds... what a difference 2-3 wks makes a...

anyway keep the great hunt reports coming reddog i will be living through you till next season i think im done chasing pheasants this yr??? cant stand them frozen cattails the birds just track star through them late season & get out of dodge at the 1st site/sound of hunters no fun to hunt them runners with my old man that cant get around like he once did...

Reddog - I truly appreciate all the details of your adventures. It is very inspiring to read and know that you appreciate the opportunity and experience of what SD has to offer.

It was an honor meeting up with you and your wife over a few sodas and some very fine pizza. I had never met up with someone from UPH before and you are a model of people I want to spend time with.

probably a dumb question but how do you keep the cooling system on the outboard from freezing in those temps??

I was raised as a kid in Wisconsin and loved fishing walleyes as a youngster

Keep it in the water, and drain it as soon as it hits daylight on the ramp. Keeping the trolling motor shaft from freezing is much harder..

Keeping the eyes from freezing shut on my rods is difficult also, not to mention a pain in the butt..

There are lots of things that have made winter boat fishing much easier. but few have made more impact than a 4 stroke outboard motor..

Thanks Tanner.. We had had a great time, but Im pretty sure I had one too many cocktails...Other than Lazer, who Ive known a long time outside of UPH, Ive never met anyone from here before either.. Ive corresponded with quite a few though.

My wife was just glad I didnt invite you to come live with us for the summer, like the one guy I met on the internet.. ;)

Anxious to see more pictures of your pup.. She is only 40 miles away from my house..

the best thing I have found and wont damage your line is to smear some chap-stick on the guides. Gramps used to do it when we fished northern British Columbia for steelhead waaaaaaaaaay back in the day....early 80's:)
