Effective shot density

I am patterning different shotgun shells and I was wondering if anyone knew what an effective shot density would be for pheasant. I guess shot size and type are factors. I currently looking at #4 bismuth and #5 and 6 lead. I'm patterning at 30 and 40 yards.

No need to over think it. If the pattern is evenly covered over a 25 to 30 inch circle, it should be fine. I normally use Imp Cyl in a repeater and quality No. 5 shot. I don't shoot past about 30 yards and have had good success over the last 20 years. I like no, 5 lead much better than no. 6. No. 4 bismuth is a good choice for nontox.

I find I like to put at least 150 pellets in the air for shots from 25-50 yards. My 1-1/8 oz loads of lead 5s & 1 oz loads of bismuth 5s both have about 195. My 1 oz bismuth 4 loads have about 155. I don't know what percent patterns they throw, or what the pellet/sq-in density is at a given range, but I shoot them all through a MOD choke all season long & they kill roosters well.
