Economic Impact from Pheasant Hunters in SD

A friend just sent this link to a report from SD GF&P on the economic impact from pheasant hunters in 2009. Pretty interesting information if you like that kind of stuff. Over $200 Million total was spent state-wide by 97,350 non-residents and 69,950 resident hunters. Residents spent $38.6 Million and nonresidents spent $181.2 Million to shoot 1.598 Million pheasants, or $125/bird "average" for all hunters.

This seems a bit high to me. Myself and three friends just drove from WY and UT for 5 days of hunting and we spent $345 each for 15 birds, or $23/bird. We will make two more trips, and the costs should be similar. We spent $550 for a cabin (4 nights), $69 for a motel on a travel day, a tank a gas a day ($250 total), one night dinner ($20 ea) at a restaurant and $100 in groceries and $80 in beer while in SD. The "average" nonresident spent $1,861.32 (or $199.68/bird) in 2009 to shoot an "average" of 9.3 pheasants. The "average" resident spent $551.80 total to kill an "average of 9.9 pheasants, for an average of $55.80/bird. This seems pretty high to me, but who knows. We go cheap, but we didn't think it was THAT CHEAP. I guess I don't see many of the guys that fly in on private planes, or come all the way from TX or overseas to hunt and buy hunting packages, guide fees, guns, ammo, clothes, etc.. Maybe when you factor those guys in....it adds up. Maybe if I bought my new Benelli in SD along with a case of ammo I would be close. But I got all that at Cabelas here in UT.

Any way you slice it, hunting in SD pays a lot of bills and brings in the money. And it is a "renewable" resource : )

it has gotten ridiculously high, i don't come anymore, Kansas is a much better overall value and i can take 4 birds per day along with 8 quail, maybe not as many birds, but a whole lot cheaper.
