Eating grass

This has probably been talked about on here before, but what's the reason that dogs will eat grass? I switched food here in the past couple of weeks and I've noticed my two shorthairs are acting like billy goats. Guess it cuts down on mowing. Just curious as to what's going on? Thanks, KansasGsp

If it's just occasionally it's most likely to relieve an upset stomach. Everytime I've ever seen my one dog eat grass it usually means vomiting later on.

If their regularly munching on grass there might be some imbalance in their diet. Try a different feed if you see them munching grass often. Either way I don't think it's much to do about anything.

It could also mean that they are still hungry or bored. I tried changing dog food but my chessie and Curly coat still eat grass. my 2cents

between the pup's spots, and all that grass she eats, my wife jokes that she's part cow.

sometimes i see her doing it after she's been running hard. I'm guessing she wants the moister. other times it could be boredom. tasty fertilizer, etc.. got me. mine has yet to puke from it though. maybe she is part cow?

You might try a Romain salad w/Oil & vinegar on the side.:D

Actually I am trying to keep the dogs out of the apples in our backyard the after affect is like walking through a building fill with tear gas.

Mr hyde and Birdshooter are both correct. Usually it is an upset stomach and the grass eases the discomfort. Boredom is an issue but after a workout they are looking for electrolytes anywhere they can find them.

I agree with some of the reasons, But I never taken a dog hunting that has not stopped to grab a mouthful of grass here and there. I just think it is something they like to eat.........Bob

My pup ate cut grass like a mad man, freshly cut or dry as a bone didn't matter, one day he just quit, spose he was just being a puppy.

I agree that it is a common occurrence, but my pup is still recovering from a stomach blockage surgery from a belly full of grass. After talking it over with the doc, the grass itself doesn't pose a threat other than the threat of a blockage. The problem is that dog stomachs cannot breakdown grass, that is why some dogs vomit after eating grass. If it is becoming a problem I have looked into some products like barley dog.

I agree with modog to a degree. From my observation on my dogs it seems to stem from an upset stomach. They seem to get that upset stomach mostly when its hot. Dogs pant a whole lot when its hot and when exercising in the heat. Seems to me the three are related. Some breeds seem to be more prone that others. Certain things they eat can certainly upset their stomach mine ate some percimmons sure enough the next day they were eating grass.
