Draw Hunt

I hunted a property W. of Earl Park today. Friend had gotten drawn (I never do).

106 acres or good, thick cover. As I expected hunting later in the year, the cocks had been hunted and knew what to do. we pointed and flushed lots of hens but the buys we running and flushing far ahead, except for two.

I had a cock flush that I could have shot but noticed it was headed right for he friend who had gotten drawn. He rarely shoots pheasants so I let the shot pass and saw him rip off two shots at that bird. Both misses.

Had another great point right in front of him on the edge of the field. Cock flushed and he says to me, "Should I shoot?" By the time I answered yes and he pulled the trigger it had to be 80 yards away! Ce La Vie! Lots of good hard hunting, saw 35 birds, 11 deer and one rabbit. I walked just under 6mi and my little dog ran 20.75m. The two big Shorthairs with us probably walked 8 miles. They didn't cover any ground like the Brittany did.

IL has that program too . Ive never drawn a permit. Must be a ton of applicants
I applied in IL this year but figured my chances would be zero being out of state, but you never know.

I did know and my results were the same as in Indiana every year i have applied - 30+ straight not chosen

I had a buddy when I was at Purdue in the late 80s who was selected for opening day on a site near Fowler if i remember right. My dad brought down our Brittany and the hunts were epic by Indiana standards. The owner of the property came out to talk to use as we had limited fairly quickly and said we hadnt even hunted the best part of the property. Either my dad or I was selected one year but later in the season and those birds were well educated and our group of 3 could only manage 3 birds for our hunt.
