You guys with all that enthusiasm, are going wise up all those migrating doves before they get to Missouri and make it hard on us! I'll have to buy more shells. As far as loads and gauge go, I'd err on the side of 12's with 3-1-8's or so. Shooting 20's and 28's are O.K.for exceptional shots, or pick and choose type shooting, but taking them as they come, sporting opportunity, you'll appreciate the extra forgiveness of a 12. Use ear protection, I made that mistake as a teenager and continued as an adult, I'm now 57 and I am range deaf in both ears, no doubt due to 30+ or minus days of dove hunting from 12 on. It will make you a great shot, and your shoulder would appreciate a light recoiling autoloader. Glad to see Iowa see the light. Enjoy
