Dogtra compass

Pre orders are out andI broke down and ordered one. My birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks so momma shouldn’t be too upset.
It’s dogtras stand alone training/ simple gps collar. It allows you to program 4 preset buttons and assign a 1-4 functions to each dog depending on how many dogs you run. For example I’ll run my 2 dogs using the 4 buttons. Tone and stim on one dog. And tone and vibrate on the other , using up the 4 buttons.
Here’s a link to a video on instragram it’s kind of loud but it covers some of the functions. I had to join , two things I swore I’d never do. Gps and instagram. blah.

My buddy calls us hunting with GPS - livescopers. As in “I’ll never hunt my dogs with live scope”.

Makes for some interesting dinner conversations.

Myself, I doubt I ever hunt without live scope again since buying it.

I went out last Saturday and hunted a little bit with the new collar. The one thing I noticed about it is that the compass on it seems to recalibrate probably more than necessary. And when it’s in the process of recalibrating the correction functions on the handheld won’t correct the dog which I definitely didn’t like. Maybe that can be fixed with a software update.?
Today was to warm to hunt so I took the dogs to the park and played with and recorded track lines.Screenshots don’t do the detail justice. The first walk was heavy crp. The second walk across the road was grass that has grown up in cedars and is a lot thinner. I took them over there to see if I could get them lost. The distances the dogs covered during the first walk are about what I expected. The second walk distance seems like kind of a stretch but I don’t know the distance it shows I walked with the handheld is accurate.

I have ran the dogtra pathfinder 2 and was looking at the compass as I hate trying to use my phone.
Please let me know your honest opinion.

What do you want it to do and how many dogs are you hunting?
I’m still working out the kinks and looking to get familiar with it in the offseason.
So far my biggest complaint has been how frequently it recalibrates. After it recalibrates until you hit the button and ok it you lose control of the correction buttons. Or if you happen to catch it in the middle of a recalibration you have to hit the button and back out of it to regain correction functions. It kind of has been a pain in the butt. You don’t want to have to wake the screen up and look at it and make sure iyou have control of it every time before you tone your dog back or stim them. I’m not sure exactly how often it recalibrates but I know the first time I used it it happened 3 or 4 times in a 5 hr hunt. It seems like every hunt that I’ve been on at least once I’ve tried to call a dog back and got no response before I figured out what was going on.
Being able to assign a button to a dog is nice. I run one dog with tone and vibrate and the other dog with tone and stim. But the stim dial can move I tried to stim the one the other day. I keep it on 30 and I had somehow backed it down to 1.
Other than that I haven’t had anything I really thought was too far out of the ordinary. I lost gps connection to both collars the other day until I cycled the handheld off and back on but it still had ecollar control But I imagine that happens with any unit. The direction arrow is not perfect but if you are walking towards a dog it corrects itself enough that it will get you there. And distance is pretty accurate.
I think if the kinks can be worked out dogtra will work them out with patches or software updates. That would be my only hesitation. Can it be fixed. Can they give you a warning tone or give you back function while it’s recalibrating. But you would think software updates would take care of the frequency right? Maybe not?
Steve Snell did a good job of covering the basics on it. You can look him up on YouTube or on Facebook.

Thank you for the feedback.
I usually run both dogs at same time and using my cell phone to get the dogs attention is a hassle.
I like the features of the pathfinder and really don't want to start over.
Thanks again and I will be giving the compass a shot
