Dogs and Planes?

Let's hear some opinions on taking your dogs on a plane. I fly a lot and have seen an increase of little ankle biters sitting in "breathable purses" in the seat next to me. I don't think my Vizsla would fit in a carry on but not sure what I think about checking him as luggage. If it were a direct flight I might feel a little better, but I have had bags lost on a layover flight more than once and where I would fly into SD and MT to hunt I can't go direct. I understand its not person and they should be fine sitting in their crate below for a few hours but any comments positive or negative?

I have heard some very bad horror stories. From dogs getting run over in their crates to dying in the cabin. I don't think I would ever do it.

As long as it is a direct flight dogs handle it fine. It is heat you want to watch. I won't trust my dog in warmer climate with someone who can't speak english.
You can teach your dog to pass a working dog test, then they can put there little orange vest on and fly with you on a plane. All working dogs must be allowed to board. Thats the sweet way to go about it.

I had my pup flown to me at about 10 weeks. The airlines will only fly pets on planes that have the pressurized luggage compartments, and I think most are pretty anal about the tempurature forecast as well. The breeder I purchased my pup from had frozen a block of ice in the water dish in the kennel, so that it wouldn't spill while the dog was being moved and loaded, and then would gradually melted as the trip went on. Overall, I don't think flying is any dog's favorite activity, but if you get set up with a non-stop, do it when the forecast isn't really hot or real cold, I think it's not too big of a deal....
