Dog Wants to Hunt

Took Gus the Brittany to the off leash area at the local reservoir. We left the trail to take a few lines through the thick spring grass. He started quartering and scenting, but all that flew were song birds. He was disappointed about the birds but he enjoyed the hour off leash.

Only bird in town syndrome. Mine are pointing sparrows and flys around the house and kennel. British shooters use to have special low report, short range garden guns made, loaded with salt, to shoot dragonflies, butterflies, and the like to keep the eye sharp. Sounds like the dogs would enjoy it too!

My Brittany - also named Gus - has taken to pointing at my kitten. I think it's hilarious, and considering I haven't hunted over him or had him on live birds yet, seeing his form is great. Until he decides to 'flush' the kitten. Poor Lucy hit the ceiling, and won't go near Gus any more.

How were your upland and turkey seasons? Got pics? With Gus, I know your upland season this year should be better.

I had a great time chasing turkeys. Saw birds every day for the six days I hunted. I could have sealed the deal on a Jake the second day, and with the opportunity for a second tag, I don't know why I didn't bother - but I didn't. Ironically, that was the only bearded bird that got within shooting distance my whole week out. Weather had a lot to do with it - cool and rainy. Had fog three mornings that limited our visibility across the field to 50yds. Had a coyote come in one of those mornings, around 40yds or so - if I'd had a slug, I would have dropped him. So - no success photos from my Turkey Hunt. But, I'll go back next year. I've got a score to settle ;)

Upland last fall - for grouse - was dismal. Only saw maybe 15 birds all season, and only bagged one - the rest were competing to make the Olympic team - 100m dash! I hunted pheasant on a preserve a few times and filled the freezer with them, so I can't really complain. Hope to get Gus out there in July/August on some cull birds, and hunt over him there in September and November, when I've booked my hunts. I'm sure he'll help a lot with the grouse too - and I plan on trying my hand at woodcock this year as well. Looks like it might just be a good Fall :)
