Dog vest/skid plate

Hey guys, just researching dog gear. Wondering what I should get for my lab. Season starts here Nov 1, so its not warm. I have been looking at 3 items.

1. Filson Tin Cloth dog chest protector
2. LL Bean Skid Plate chest protector
3. Cabela's 5mm Neoprene Vest w/ Armor-Flex Chest Protector

I like the look of the Filson, but can't seem to find it in Orange. The LL bean is cheaper then Filson. Both get great reviews. Cabelas looks nice but its a vest, thicker, probably a lot warmer. More visability with the vest then the 2 skid plate protectors.

Any advice

I bought the Cabela vest and have yet to use it. Would prefer a lighter vest for upland hunting vs the Cabela's. My Golden does get burr's on his chest and behind the front legs - very irritating!

I use the Body Guard Dog Vest from Sylmar Dogwear on my Brittanys. Cabelas use to sell a similar vest but I don't see it on their web site anymore. I've used this style vest for years. they give decent protection and excellent visibility.

The neoprene would be for colder weather only, but Labs don't really need any protection from cold. So either the Filson or LL Bean's I would think.

Good point...neoprene too heavy for my dog, most of the time.

On another note...I hunted with a fellow that made two trips to the vet over the years, due to puncture wounds in the chest. He finally bought a vest for the dog and it seems to help.

I use the Mendota Skid Plate. works well & my dogs have never seemed to get hot. The back straps also make for a convenient handle when needed.

I Use the Sylmar front body suit. It's very goofy looking. People do laugh at Ox when he wears it. But everybody knows he would not be alive today without it(run in with razor wire). So they respect the goofy vest.

I never use anything unless I know I am headed toward barbed wire. Normaly it is plenty cold around Minnesnowta by the time I get rolling. I skip the first few weeks and go till the snow is too deep and 50 below LOL. If I put one on its the neoprene. Works fine for the barbed wire and covers more of the dog. They still get some scrapes on the legs, but at least they don't get gutted. Had one rip her self open from the chin to her crotch one time. 600 some stitches and loss of a couple teets. I have a skid plate, and it is better then nothing, but doesn't cover enough to make it worth while for me so that is basically scrapped. Free to anyone who wants it. Not sure on others. The neo I have is an avery older model and works the best for me here. Only issue is it will pack some snow in and get ice. Why I use nothing where there is no fence.
