Dog Ingesting Seeds, etc While Hunting

I've not seen this one before in 25 years of hunting but my Lab came home and puked up a bunch of seeds, weeds and a little rooster pin feather. She doesnt appear to have any breathing issues. I'll monitor the poop to make sure its a clean crap with no blood, etc.

Anyone else encounter this before? After 22 years of shorthairs the family convinced to get a lab. Never had issues like this with GSP and I hunted them hard, really hard.

I guess in the future I won't go looking for the thickest, gnarliest cover I can find. But that's generally where the birds are.

Any thoughts would be welcome!

Could your dog have come across the carcass of a field dressed pheasant and eaten its crop?

BritChaser, no. We just ran thru some really nasty crap and it was warm and her mouth was wide open. Hell, I even got a mouthful of seeds and crap in my eyes too. The pheasant feather was from a bird I dropped and she fetched. She did get a mouthful of feather as the bird was a cripple and the chase was on. Thank gods for a good dog. That damn bird was ready to go to track meet in the thick woods an there's no way I got get thru that hot mess.

The scary thing is depending on where you hunt and run in fields with foxtail. Now that's some dangerous stuff for dogs. I see the stuff and stay away from it. I should carry a machete in the field to cut the shit down.

that is weird. I thought someone just posted about a dog getting a seed somewhere and it caused all sorts of problems? i would for sure keep an eye on it.

I've often worried about seeds myself. only since a very good friend of mine that's a quail biologist in Florida had a problem with kennelmate to one of my wirehairs. THis was over 10 years ago now...but somehow a "seed" was ingested or inhaled...stuck on wall of dogs lungs...formed a sac around it and it swelled up. Dog showed no signs of any problems...he continued to hunt the dog every day....then week or so later while he was at work...dog was in outside kennel...the sac ruptured...dog bled to death internally. vey strange but that's what it was determined to be.

She seems fine. Had a good long nap and ate. I'll take it easy tomorrow and plan on cutting outing shorter to watch some college football.

The foxtail is very bad. Google it so you know what it will do to a dog and what it looks likes so you can avoid it.

Update: The good news is all is fine with pooch. Ended up giving dog Hills Nutritional Sensitive Stomach. Cleaned up the crap quickly with no blood in stool. Vet said that stomach/bowels must have got irritated enough. Coughing is gone.
The bad news is I have too much work now that I can't get out.. Can thanksgiving hurry up and get here so I can enjoy.
