Dog box question

I have a large plastic Vari kennel I use in the back of truck to haul my setter, he fits fine and can stand up in it. My question is: I have a chance to buy an aluminum kennel for the back of truck with top storage, my dog will not be able to stand all the way up in it though, he will have plenty of lay down space, do any of u run short kennels for hauling dogs, I know to stop every couple of hours and let him out when on a road trip but still concerned if it is too short!

Depends on how "hyper' your dog is, and if it will lay down. I had a dog that would not relax, except on a very long trip, and he would rub his back on the ceiling of his crate. I had to get a bigger one.

I have a topper on my truck, so I keep my dogs in a wire kennel in the bed, as I use the truck for other things too.

I prefer the dog not stand as it could cause injury if you hit the brakes, etc. I use an aluminum box without storage and it does provide a couple of inches more headroom.

Guys told me the dog has to have enough room t move and turn around, you don't want your dog to be standing.

this is the rule of thumb I have always used ( build the box big enough to put 2 dogs in each compartment but don't build it asa tall as the dog rason bieng if you do ever have to double stack the dogs they cannot stand and if a dog can't stand they can't fight and I have double stacked plenty of times and they have never had a fight in the box out of it is a differnt story but my dogs never fight amung themselves anyway usually only when another dog starts it then there is a problem

Fenway has the right answer in my book. That is the way I buy travel crates for my dogs also........Bob

thanx guys, I bought it, my dog cannot stand in it but he can move around, when I told him to Kennel he jumped on the tailgate, stuck his head in then backed out, I will fix that!

Aluminum box's left in direct sun light can get hot, in summer it can kill a dog
if you use it year around A taller "larger" one lets air move. In 30 years trainning dogs I've never had a dog hurt if box is tied down. I guess if box is bouncing around it could. Try a cover for you vari kennel. And tie it down.

Fenway's response x2. Enough to turn and lay down. Not big enough to stand in. Doesn't take as much energy to heat smaller area. It gets awefully cold running down the highway back there in the winter. Same reason you don't want a huge dog house.
