Dog Boot Question

During my hunt yesterday, Pride stepped on a huge goat-head hidden beneath the snow. Given his paws were already sore, I booted him with a set I purchased on EBay. During our walk in the next field, three of the four boots came off in the snow. I was not happy, but what should I have expected for $35?

Does anyone have a favorite dog boot that does not come off easily and protects the paw?

Dog Boots

I like the Ruff-Wear boots, as they have a rubber sole that will protect the paws from sharp metal you may find around the fields. But I have found (after losing many boots) that if you do a little extra you can keep them on:

You might have tried this already but I wrap the dogs leg just above the paw to the ankles with the stretchy bandage tape, then tape the top of the boots to that (with duct or ahesive tape). Seems to keep the boots on and from rubbing the dog raw.

I also found, it could be just me, that dogs put most of their weight on the front legs/paws when running and that you can get away with only protecting the front paws.

Anyone have thoughts on that?

Good luck

Unless u end up in a mess with stickers. Ur dogs feet arnt conditioned. When u pull the stickers out for them they end up expecting it..... My dogs pick theres out on the fly!!!!! I dont baby them. Just my two cents....

Cabelas has boots that are just nylon with velcro attachments. Tape them on with duct tape and expect to have to replace them from time to time. I've got three sets of four in my equipment bag. When my dog comes back with one or two missing, I put more on. That's just the way it is. This time of year, the burrs are loosing there points and my dogs just pull them out themselves.

Someone told me about these a while back and i've been very happy with them.

I do vet wrap under the booties and a band of duct tape over the bootie velcro. I have lost two booties in about 15 days of hunting, they are starting to get holes in them but at 2.50 a pop who cares!

This is the best way to go, I have used these for years. I do not vet wrap under but I do tape over the velcro. For better life just use a small amount of clear silocone sealant rubbed into the fabric on the bottoms and they will last 3 times as long.

Also to make them last longer make sure you keep your dogs toe nails trimmed, this is normlly where they wear first. Do not care how well your dogs feet are conditioned where i hunt with all the sand burrs, cockle burrs and goat heads no way I would not boot them up. Hunted with some field trial guys years ago who laughed when I booted my dogs up. We went into a huge cockle burr field that also had sand burrs. There dogs went 10 ft and stopped solids, paws paked with burrs. They had to carry there dogs out as I killed a limit walking in the field. I had the last laugh. I also normally hunt 3-4 days and it helps the dog recover faster if I boot them but only my opinion but my dogs are house dogs and do not spend there life in a concrete kennel.

I have not used boots on my new dog, a 5 yr old English Setter (30 lb) but have some just in case I run into those rare fields of nasties. I did periodically boot my 90 lb Irish Setter who when he got into a burr patch laid down to take them out, there by covering himself with goat heads. So when I hunted those fields I would boot him up. But my point is I have retired the Irish Setter and have a few "Large" pairs of boots if anyone is interested, most never used. They are a "bit" to big for my English, drop me a PM.

Ive told a ton of people about these. Its the way to go.
One bit of advice - put them on your dog from time to time whether you need them or not. Then its not such a shock after a while.
And, get a Hi-Viz color. Not Black or ...

Put boots on both the dogs today so they wouldn't get ice balls in their toes/ pads. Worked perfect when following the instructions above. Didn't have any pop off. I think the dogs actually like them once they start hunting.

Will definitely be using them this week in N WI.
One more thing. If you order from them, buy extra boots. Shipping isn't cheap but the boots are. I have the thin ones and the 1000 weight.

I should've taken a picture of them booted up today so folks can see how they should look. I'll try and remember later this week.
