From research it appears this may be the most reliable Cummins motor. Which do u have 12 valves or 24 valves? What are the pluses for each? I like 23 mpg.

I guess the 5.9 is too old of an engine for this crowd.
5.9 pros, no vp44 fuel pump.
5.9 cons, more oil leaks, blocks can crack on exhaust side mid block.

24v pros, better mileage, less oil leaks, electronic controlled components.
24v cons, vp44 pump.

Either engine biggest issue is previous owners maintenance practices. Namely air intake maintenance. Seen many with cylinder damage due to dirt in the intake air. This will show when checking blowby which is a requirement for either prospective purchase.

Any other questions let me know, 21 years experience on Cummins engines. 18 of it as a tech at a Cummins distributor.
