Hey all

A couple of quick questions for you ahead of MN Pheasant Summit:

Are you over 40, or under 40?

What has been the biggest change/surprise you've seen in MN the last 10 years chasing pheasants?

Thanks

Dan

Under 40, age 24. Can't answer the second question since I have only been pheasant hunting for 5 years now and only lived in Minnesota for one year.

Over 40. I ditto the lost of habitat. I would also add the lack of private land owners allowing you to hunt their land. Owners that use to allow hunters on their land are now looking for everyone to pay a fee.

Over 40. More public land to hunt, less private land. Not that more people say no, just less people controlling more land. There's a good chance now if you stop at a farmhouse they don't own or control the land around the house. I've never had someone ask for a trespass fee in Minnesota. Habitat loss and drainage going in all over the place. I see more hunters out late in the season then I used to.

Under 40. Agreed Habitat & Water without we will never have those great years back and be considered a mediocre pheasant state. Lost CRP and dried up sloughs, its been proven nesting and winter cover is what they need stop drain tiling!

Over...75

Habitat: reduction in nesting areas and sloughs. Mowing ditches up to the roadway. We have had several severe winters that hasn't helped the population.

Over 40

In SE Mn where I've been hunting a string of tough winters and wet springs have done a number on the birds for the last 6-7 years. Up until then I was doing a lot better. The habitat where I hunt is about the same with no drastic changes.

Under 40. Been hunting pheasants over 10 years. Habitat loss would be the biggest change. Also to go with that would be the lack of standing crops left for wildlife over the winter. Used to be almost every field had a few rows left for wildlife over the winter. Now the only crops left are ones that the area was too wet to harvest

Completely agree with this its gotten so hard to tell who owns the land i have almost given up asking for permission on private land. In the past many land owners would post their name or phone number on the trespassing signs but i never see this anymore.

Under 40 loss of habitat, mowing ditches, draining sloughs.

Its great to see that many of you are 40 or less! I am 62-where does the time go??!!

I agree, the farms continue to grow in size, as farmers seem to need that they farm to "scale" I am even seeing that in the Dakotas. I think that in the Dakotas, and MN to a lesser degree since they already have changed the land to row crops-the big guys want to clear everything and row crop it.

TBear I will see if I can move this as you suggested.

Dan

Looks like some great weather coming up-if my dog wasn't already out of commission for the season I'd rather be hunting than at the summit!!
